GUTTMAN POINTS CLAIMED BY STATE Prosecution Presents For- mer Show Girl Friend of Accused Promoter. By the Associated Press. LOS ANGELES, June 29.—The State elaimed a two-point margin today in the trial of Henry Guttman, young Beverly Hills promoter, who is charged with the grand theft of $44,000 from his former employer, Mrs. Blanche Sewell, socialite copper heiress. Principals rested in a week end re- eess of court following a day in which the prosecution: Blocked, temporarily at least, in- troduction before the jury of a pur- ported undraped photograph of the wealthy Beverly Hills matron. Presented Christine Sloan, one-time New York show girl, as a surprise witness against Guttman, whom she said she once planned to marry. The ex-Follies beauty declared Guttman told her after they met in New York that a “wealthy widow in California was employing him as her business manager and had given him $50,000 to invest in a partnership.” Mrs. Sewell charged the amount covered the $44000 allegedly mis- appropriated by her business manager. The State succeeded in keeping the picture of Mrs. Sewell out of the jury’s| sight when their witness emphatically denied having given it to Guttman and charged that he must have stolen & out of her safety deposit vault. LONG FOE OUSTED ‘Walmsley's Former Aide Dropped by New Orléans Police. NEW ORLEANS, Juue 29 (P).— Supt. of Police George Reyer announc- ed today that Arthur Romaguera, former detective and chauffeur for Mayor T. Semmes Walmsley. had been dropped from the city police Jorce. The police force has been taken over under legislative act by the | State administration of Senator Huey P. Long and Gov. O. K. Allen and Romaguera has been uader suspen- sion for several months. Life of Elms Threatened by Foreign Plague Campaign to Save Beautiful Trees Is Launched., Millions of America’s most beautiful tree, the white elm. as well as the five other species of elm in the United Btates, are threatened with death. A plague which may wipe out these elms as completely as another plague | wiped out the American chestnut ex- ! ists today and is steadily gaining | ground. There is no cure for it. The | only hope for the elm rests on the | possibility of entirely eliminating the | plague from the country. The only way to do this is to lo- eate infected trees and destroy them, says the American Tree Association in a bulletin called “Another Ameri- | can Tragedy.” This work is now be- | ing conducted with a force so small } that it is doubtful if much headway | can be made. There is a well-founded fear that ' before adequate forces can be mobil- i7ed to fight to save the elm, the plague will have spread to such dis- tances that before many years all varisties of the elm in this country | will be destroyed. The statement is backed by facts acquired by investi- galions of Government scientists who | are conducting a fight against the dis- | ease. i In June, 1933, near New York City, was found the first evidence of the fatal brown plague of the elms, called the Dutch elm disease because it was originally discovered in Holland.
