Workers in the Washington mod- ernization canvass obtained pledges from 281 owners of home and com- mercial property during the past week, which have an estimated value | of $70270 in alteration and repair work, it was announced today by Miss Elizabeth Wheeler, who has guarge of the local better housing compaign. The workers, Miss Wheeler stated. Interviewed 5,149 property owners during the week. During the four and one-half months of the campaign 4834 pledges have been obtained through nearly 61,000 interviews with property owners. Translated into work, Miss Wheeler said these pledges mean approximately $1,200,000 in modernization of homes and business places. Despite the fact that ground was broken only two weeks ago, Miss Wheeler said that the F. H. A. model home, which the firm of L. E. Breun- -4nger & Sons is building at 1430 Lo- cust road is almost completed. All brick work on the Colonial style house has been finished and the roof buillt on. The house is on the corner of Quesada street and Broad Branch road. Paul T. Stone, Inc, built the model home as a part of the new development of Wrenwood. It is presented by J. Wesley Buchanan, realtor, under sponsorship of The Star. The public is invited to inspect the dwelling, which will remain open for 30 days from 10 a.m. until 9 p.m. HOUSE BUILDING GAINS CONTINUE $27,779,200 in 37 States First Half of June Equal to Month Last Year. Residential building awards con- tinue to show encouraging improve- ing to the report of the F. W. For the initial half of June the corporation reported non-residential | building contracts of $22,292,200, as against $21,541,000 for the correspond- ing period of 1924; civil engineering projects undertaken during the first half of June totaled $18,466,800, as against $28,705,300 for the like period | of last year. The figures for con- tracts covering all types of construc- tion in the 37 States amounted to $66.538,200 for the first half of June, an increase of about 5 per cent over the total for the like period of last year. For the elapsed portion of 1935, through June 15, total construction | contracts amounted to $615,038,300, as against $790.574,900 for the cor- responding portion of 1934.
