FINANCIAL PHONE NET RISES 10 §179.377 HERE May Total Represents Gain of $10,544 Over Level of Year Ago. RY EDWARD C. STONE. Net earnings of the Chesapeake & Potomac Telephone Co. in May totaled £179.377, in comparison with $168,833 in the same month last year, an in- erease of $10,544, according to the monthly statement just filed with the Public Utilities Commission. Operating revenues in May amount- ed to $859,263, against $844.329 in May. 1934. At the same time op- erating expenses were kept lower than last year, being $588,098, against $590,861, leaving net operating reve- nues of $271,168, as compared with $253.468. Taxes were slightly higher. so that net, operating income stood at $204,762, against $190,110. Total gross was larger than a vear ago, from which interest deductions of $25,087 were taken, against $21.388 a vear ago, Jeaving the above-mentioned balance before dividends. Washington was served by 195.229 telephones in May 31, a net increase of 1,364 telephones over the preceding month. At the end of May. 1934, there were 182,000 telephones in gervice. Capital Calls Tncrease. Telephone callz in Washington also increased in May, there having been 23,449,000 made during the month, as compared with 21,588,000 calls dur- ing May, 1934. In the first five months of this year calls numbered 107.- $10,000, against 101,867,000 in the eorresponding period last year. For the first five months of this gear operating revenues totaled $4.- 175,355, against $4.091.358: operating #xpenses called for $2.910,665. as com- pared with $2.850.873; aperating taxes ook $318.624, against §314.644. leaving ® net operating income of $946.063, in comparison with $925841 a year »so. Grass income amotnted to $94 sgainst $027.081. while interest de- ductions required $126:231. against $108,765 a year ago. This left a balance before dividends of $819,223. &= compared with $818.316 in the fi five months of 1934, putting net earn- ings ahead of last year by a very small margin. Washington Gas Net Lower. The monthly report of the Wash- saton Gas Light Co., filed with the Public Utilities Commission morning, shows net operating revenue for the month of May of $150.322. compared with $167.110 for May of last year, a decrease of $16,788. Operating revenue for May, 461, a vear ago, an $5 increase of $22.445. Operating expenses, including taxes and uncollectible bills, increased $39.- 233, this vear's figure being $385,139, egainst $345.906 in May, 1934. | Non-operating revenues for May this year, decreasing $16.554 {from last vear's total of $28.280 to $11.726, re- rulted in a gross corporate income of $162,048, as compared with $195.390. ® decrease of $33.342. Interest deductions of $72,090 for Mav, 1935, were $2,215 more than last vear's figure of $69,875, resulting in a net. income of $89,958. compared with £125.515 for May, 1934, a decrease of 3. | Net income for the first five months | of 1935 totaled $676.616 against $768.- 045 in the corresponding period last year, a drop of $91,429. While oper- ating revenues showed a gain of $72, 277. operating expenses, including taxes, advanced $127,013. i Georgetown Gas Net Higher. | ‘The monthly report of the George- | town Gaslight Co. also filed with the | Public Utilities Commission this morn- ing, shows a net income of $3.425 for the month of May, 1935, as compared with a loss of $4,540 for May of last year, an increase of §7.965. Operating revenues this May were £105,865, as against $101.353 for May, 1934, an increase of $4.512. Operat- ing expenses, including taxes and | uncollectible bills. decreased $3462, this year's figure being $98,010 against $101.472 for May, 1934 Non-operating revenue was $1 more this year than last vear, resulting in & gross corporate income of $7.856, compared with a loss of $119 for May. 1934, an increase of $7.975. Interest deductions increased $10, this year's figure being $4,431, against $4,421 for May, 1934. The Georgetown Gas Co. also filed returns for the first five months, show- ing a gain net income of $18.730. The company netted $24.366 against $6,136 in the same five months last year, about four times as satisfactory re- turns. Operating Tevenues were ot quite up to last year, but reductions in operating expenses much more than made up the difference. Terminal Dividend Voted. Directors have declared the regular semi-annual dividend of $1.50 per share on the total outstanding stock of the Terminal Refrigerating & Ware- housing Corp., as of the close of busi- ness June 28, payable July 1. The stock books of the company will be closed as at the close of business June 28, and reopened July 2. HUDSON RETAIL SALES WELL ABOVE YEAR AGO @pecial Dispateh to The Star. NEW YORK, June 29.—Sales of Hudsons and Terraplanes for June are showing a strong upward trend, the Hudson Motor Car Co. announced. Sales for the third week in June ere materially better than the sec- ond week and the second week was better than the first, states the com- pany. Sales for June to date almost equal those of May for the correspond- ing period. The first week in June actually ex- ceeded the first week in May, in spite of all traditions to the contrary, the ecompany reports, and retail sales of Hudsons and Terraplanes at the pres- ent time are ahead of last year by nearly 7.000 cal Sales have pushed production so closely that it is diffi- cult to deliver many models in less than three weeks' time. —_—— U. 8.
