CURB IS IRREGULAR IN SHORT SESSION Alcohol Shares Gain Further but Other Sections of Market Hesitate. By the Assoctated Press. NEW YORK, June 29.—Alcohol stocks continued their climb on the curb market today, but other divisions were hesitant under week end adjust- ments and displayed a mixed tone. Trading was indifferent. Coincident with reports that the better situated liquor companies were in a good statistical position and had not been greatly disturbed by aban- donment of N. R. A, codes, & steady demand for both Hiram Walker and Distillers Corp.-Seagrams lifted these stocks major fractions. Both had advanced in the previous session. Elsewhere the trend was irregular. Small gains were shown by Bunker Hill & Sullivan, Ruberoid and Cleve- land Electric Illuminating, while losses occurred in American Gas, Electric Bond & Share and Lake Shore Mines. NEW YORK, June 29.—The Amer- ican Institute of Steel Construction reports that shops in the industry re- porting to them operated at 35.5 per cent of capacity during May. Total bookings for the month were 423811 tons, against 73,127 tons in April and a decrease of 25 per cent from the fig- ure of May, 1934. May shipments were 20 per cent per cent above the average monthly shipments during the first quarter of the current year. NEW YORK, June 29.—In & series of slow and moderate advances the cotton market this week pushed up to the best levels of the month. ‘The passing of the first July notice day without the issuance of tenders and the maintenance of a July pre- mium of from 30 to 33 points over October was regarded as emphasizing the tightness of the spot situation, and when July liquidation subsided contracts became relatively scarce. October closed yesterday at 1153, compared with 11.23 at the close of the previous Friday. As the July liquidation tapered off without any easing of the near month premium a question was raised as to how far the old crop situation might carry into the new crop posi- tions, end there was probably some buying toward the end of the week on an idea that scarcity of contracts would continue below a parity with the 12-cent loan value, pending the new crop movement. A more favorable view was taken of weather conditions over the greater part of the South and Wednesday's weekly weather report said that ex- cept for continued wetness over a considerable Northwestern area and need of moisture in the Southwest the period had been fairly favorable.
