NG STAR, WASHINGTON, D. C. OIL CHIEFS FIGHT DROP IN GASOLINE Pleased by Way Market Has Behaved in Face of Obstacles. By the Associated Press. TULSA, Okla, June 26—Fighting off a tank car gasoline decline in the face of bad weather and suspence oc- casioned by the Federal tax situation, the ol industry was optimistic this week and hoped for improvement in the refinery market. Leaders were pleased with the way the gasoline market has been hehav- ing in the face of obstacles. Wecek-end weather generally. has been bad and jobbers have been buy- ing hand-to-mouth with the fain hope that Congress would not renew the Federal tax which expires June 30. Despite this, the market has held up and the quantity of gasoline sold below the accepted price level has been negligible. The natural gasoline division had a price advance during | the week. The standard grade, 26-70, advanced 3 of a cent to bring it to 3% on group 3 (Oklahoma) freight basis. Third grade gasoline was un- changed at 43%-7: and relulnr. also unchanged, was 5%-%. Kerosene was weak, the market sagging to 3%-'4 for standard grade at some refineries. This is a drop | of 35 of a cent during the month. Better motoring weather is expected to bring a sharp upturn in consump- tion and force the jobbers to buy. Settlement of the tax question, fear from jobbers’ minds of being caught with tanks of gasoline on which they needlessly had paid the . STEEL RATE HOLDS STEADY FOR WEEK Demand . Shows Stability Despite Seasonal Lag, Iron Age States. By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, June 26.—Demand for iron and steel shows “staying powers” in spite of the seasonal tendencies to dullness, said Iron Age today in its weekly summary. Present indications are that minimum operating levels for the Summer are being approached, it added. On the basis of the publication’s estimate, steel productdon is holding at 38 per cent of capacity, unaltered from a week ago. “Caution continues to cause many buyers to allow their stocks to dwindle requirements,” asserted the review, “and it is possible, therefore, that the | current rate of production is not fully abreast of consumption. Price Doubts Eased. “Doubts as to the stability of prices are diminishing with every day that is added to the post-code period, and in certain centers, especially in the Chicago district, mill bookings have taken a contra-seasonal turn, moving upward at a time when a further decline was expected. “The automotive industry continues to be the principal threat to price | maintenance. Though motor car | makers are careful to make it clear that they have no desire to precipi- tate a wide-open break in the market structure, they argue that their po- sition as large tonnage buyers of flat- " | rolled products entitles them to ad- | justments of both prices and extras, which, they contend, can be made in |an orderly way without disastrous | consequences. | “Initial steel orders for 1936 models will be placed by automotive in terests within the next fortnight, but ' rather than purchase their current | | Buper FINANCIA heavy buying is not looked for before August. C. & O. Order to Help. “With the flow of steel to the motsi car industry diminishing, mills will soon benefit from some ofIsetting ton- nage as the result of the purchase of 5,125 freight cars by the Chesa- peake & ‘Ohlo. “The mills will also get a lift from construction orders. Though consid- erable uncertainty prevails as to pro- posed grade separation projects be- penditures for materials for work re- lief, there has been an encouraging increase in- the number of pending | projects that are reaching the con- | tracting stage.” Steel scrap prices, as measured the Iron Age average, remained un- changed. Tests prove this new alloyed oil has 2 to 4 times greater film strength than plain mineral oils and resists heat better! HERE'S THE PROOF ... On July 4th or week-end and vacation trips, you'll want to drive far and get there in a hurry. And you don't want that nagging worry of “I wonder if this speed and heat will hurt anything in my motor.” You can't always be sure when you use plain mineral oils, for they have little film strength and oils over-refined by new cleansing processes have even less. Moreover, as motor heat goes up, these oils rapidly lose film strength. Film strength is the load-carrying ability of an oil, the quality that keeps bearings and cylinders from wearing out. Lack of film strength results in costly damage. You can drive without a worry when you use Conoco Germ Processed Motor Oil! It has 2 7 4 times greater film strength than any plain mineral oil. In every test, gravi- metric measurement of motor bearings showed that Germ Processed Oil prevented wear far bet- ter than plain mineral oils. Tested in a fleet of cars equipped with the new alloy-metal bearings used in many 1935 cars, a high-quality plain mineral oil permitted 45% more wear on connect- ing rod bearings than did Germ Processed Oil. Conoco Germ Processed Motor Oil is the first alloyed oil—alloyed, much as metals are, by add- ing concentrated oily essence to highly refined oil. It is the only oil made by the Germ Process.
