The conference was in Prederick Douglass Hall of Howard University and drew to it representatives from nine Southern States, the Middle West and from the Interior, Com- merce, Agriculture and Labor De- partments. Detailed plans for a na- tional congress remain to be an- nounced. ‘Unemployment figures were present- ed which showed 36 out of every 100 Negro employables are out of work, while the general average, according to American Federation of Labor fig- ures, is only 28 out of 100. In a message read by John Herling | of the League for Industrial Democ- racy, Norman Thomas, Socialist lead- | er. appealed to Negroes to join the | Socialist party “Socialism offers to the Negro all | | the hope there is of a decent world, as the race problem in America con- | sists in denial of rights which m!
