LAW SCHOOL PUT ON TRIAL BY BAR Senator Long Challenges Association’s Status in Kennedy Case. By the Associated Press. BATON ROUGE, La, May 10— The American Bar Association has placed the Louisiana State University Law School on probation for giving a | F special law diploma to Kemble K. Kennedy, a long-time friend of Sen- ator Huey P, Long. Long was a friend of Kennedy's before he became a political power in Louisiana and once acted as Ken- nedy’s lawyer in court litigution. The Council on Legal Education . and Admissions to the Bar, the ruling body of the organization in determin- ing the standing of law schools, found that Kennedy had been issued the diploma “certifying graduation in law” before he completed his studies and without recommendation of the law faculty. Council Spokesman Heard. - A council spokesman in Washing- ton said the action was based on the single case of Kennedy. The university will be~ given a chance to answer the charge at a hearing by the council July 15 at Los Angeles. Senator Long, on hearing of the action, remarked the association is “a bunch of corporation lawyers.” He said the association “has no more legal status to control schools and colleges than I have in the govern- ment of China. Louisiana will tell | them to go slap dab to hell.” Kennedy, in November, 1930, was convicted in District Court at Baton | Rouge on a charge of criminal libel in connection with the publication of the Whangdoodle, a paper which attacked the school administration. He was suspended by the late Thomas W. Atkinson, former presi- dent of the university, just before he had completed his final examinations in the Law School. Reprieved by Long. Kennedy served eight days of his sentence of one year before he was reprieved by the then Gov. Long. Long continued to issue reprieves until 1932, when the personnel of the State Board of Pardons changed and Kennedy was granted a pardon. The board of supervisors authorized the issuance of a degree to Kennedy on June 5, 1933. This degree was signed by James M. Smith, university president, and Gov. O. K. Allen, but not by R. L. Tullis, dean of the Law School. Kennedy unsuccessfully sought ad- mission to the bar from the Supreme Court. One of Long's laws later established the State Bar of Louisiana and it admitted Kennedy to practice on March 2, 1935. . By the Associated Press, BERLIN, May 10.—The air ministry inagurated a drive to have every Berlin resident fly over the city at least once as part of its campaign to boost aviation. The move is in harmony with ef- forts in the Third Reich to write a new version of the law of supply and demand by governmental intercession. Loyal Nazis with increasing fre- quency in recent months have been informed that on certain dates they must buy lottery tickets, purchase a bit of amber, take a trip or read more books “because national unity de- mands the participation of every German.” The scheme has been used to pro- mote marriages, encourage house re- pairs, stimulate the sale of Nazi news- papers and boost the sales of the radio, automobile, furniture and tex- tile industries, among numberless others.
