PALM PRINTS HELD BEST FOR INFANTS Specialist Discounts Finger and Foot Records to Prevent Mix-ups. By the Assoclated Press. CHICAGO, May 10.—Palm prints of new-born babies were described to- day by Dr. Gilbert P. Pond of Oak Park, 11, as the best positive method of identification to safeguard against mixed identity. His studies, he said, led him to discredit the value of toe, finger and foot prints of bables. In an extensive identification study he and associates made Dr. Pond told the Illinols Homeopathic Medical As- sociation they concluded that the footprint method now in general use in hospitals was valuable only psy- chologically for parents. He said ridges in the palm remain the same throughout life, making it possible to use the same prints for identification purposes at any time. ‘To test this method for accuracy a collection of 500 palm prints were made from new-born babies by Dr. Pond. These were labeled with the mother's name. Another set of 50 ‘were made at random from the same group of babies and were not labeled. Each of the 50 unknown prints was easily identified, he said, within 3 to 12 minutes, Probably the most famous case otl mixed babies in Chicago was the | Bamberger-Watson tangle. After the | youngsters had been taken from the Thospital identification tape on them | was found by the parents leading | them to believe the infants had been | awitched. Turmoil followed in which | blood tests and extensive studies | were made of babies and parents by physicians and scientists, and a court was called upon to make a decision. = . Long got a stronger hold on Louisiana politics today with his latest “dictator” laws, enacted at a special session of the Legislature last month, becoming effective at noon. Control the expenditure of any Federal work relief funds received in Louisiana. 2. Dictate the finances of all local governing agencies in the State, and, 3. Place his men exclusively at all the polls on election day to count the ballots.
