BACH, GERSHMIN PARTNERS ON AIR Classicists and Moderns Find Meeting Place in Radio Programs. ACH, Brahms and Beethoven rest shoulder to shoulder with Gershwin, Grofe and Green on the shelves of the Colum- bia Broadcasting System’s music library. There is no friction. What is one man's Bach is another man's spinach; and the same goes for Gershwin and Johnny Green. Julius Mattfeld, manager of the li- brary and a recognized music his- torian, sees eye to eye with the popular and classical juxtaposed on his shelves as he watches history march on. Mattfeld, an earnest, scholarly young man who has two published works to his credit—"“One Hundred Years of Grand Opera in New York™” and “Folk Music of the Western Hemisphere"—surveys ¢he two schools without prejudice and narrows the gAp between them down to a mere quarter century, “Popular music,” he declares rather enigmatically, “is try- ing to catch up with classical by being 25 years behind time.” By way of elucidation he defines| ragtime as “a product of the '90s and the predecessor of modern jazz” and then jumps back to Wagner's time, earlier in the nineteenth century. He points out that a “creative lull, | 777 broken only by Richard Strauss,” followed Wagner. Music later enjoyed & renascence when Debussy and Ravel THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON, D. Assembling at the Knights “‘experimented in sounds.” It is their | -0 influence, he says, which continued its course through Berlin, Kern, Cohs‘n, Hubbell et al. After the war, which restricted German music in America, Broadway’s musicians, Mattfeld shows, gained new ideas of sound from the introduction of French music. “We find them using a fantastic ending, based on the chord of the sixth, which was used in 1906 by Albeniz, a Spaniard partly educated in France. “Then came Ravel's ‘Bolero’” he said. “One reason for the popularity of this work was the simplicity of its musical appeal as a relief from the intricacies of impressionistic French music. It provided an ‘open sesame’ for the orchestrator and arranger. It released their energies and resulted in the interpretations of music as they are heard on the radio today. This is what I mean when I say popular music is trying to catch up ‘with classical by being 25 years be- hind time.” * kX X X B. UNTIL about a year ago, Clicquot Club Ginger Ale was sold in full-pint bottles. Then, we decided to have a large bottle too. And, having decided upon a large bottle, we naturally made it a really large bottle . . . not 27 ounces or 28 ounces, like so many so-called “quart” bottles, but a full, 32-ounce quart! Our business during this last year has shown that people appreciate good quality and real, honest measure. We could not let this first anniversary of Clicquot Club’s full-quart bottle go by, without ex- pressing our thanks for your patronage.
