FINANCIAL. CORPORATE BONDS IMPROVE FURTHER Preference for High-Yield Classifications Apparent. U. S. Issues Down. By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, May 4—Corporate bonds were in moderatély active de- mand today, and traders showed a preference for the high yield classifica- tions. United States Governments | lost a little further ground in light trading. Secondary ratings of the rail and utility divisions were bought at frac- tionally higher levels. Industrials were mixed, and low-priced communi- cation issues were & bit heavy. Prime Joans were quiet, with values about even with the previous finals. American & Foreign Power 5s moved up 1% to 64, a new high. Smaller ad- vances occurred in Chile Copper 5g, Columbia Gas & Electric 5s, Consoli- dated Gas 5!%s, Goodyear 5s, Great Northern 4125, New York Central 5s, Nickel Plate 4!2s, North American Co. 5s, Pennsylvania General 4l3s and Southern Railway 4s. Postal Telegraph 5s gave up a point and International Telephone 5s soft- ened fractionally. United Drug 5s and American Telephone 5s also eased a little. In the Federal group losses ranged from 1-32 to 9-32 of a point. Treas- ury 3'4s showed the widest decline, but dealings in this issue were very small. Federal Farm Mortgage 3%4s improved 3-32. A number of the foreign classifica- tions moved ahead from fractions to a point. They included Austrians s, Italian 7s, German 7s, Japanese 5128 and some of the Brazilians. Chicago Grain By the Associated Press. - CHICAGO, May 4.—Downturns of grain prices early today accompanied reports of cold wet snow in the dust area of the Southwest. This is the first time this season that the region of duststorm origin has been blanketed | Norway 5%s '65. with moisture. Opening unchanged to 13 up, July, 9713a97%, wheat soon underwent a general setback. Corn started unchanged to 3 off, July, "83%a83';, and continued downhill. ‘Weakness of grain prices here was checked to a considerable degree by upturns of silver, cotton and securi- ties. Besides, Liverpool wheat quota- tions were relatively firm, owing to large purchases of Argentine and Danubian wheat for Italy and because of further buying of Australian wheat to be shipped to Oriental countries. Fears also were expressed that the moisture Southwest had come too late to be of much help to the domestic ‘Winter wheat crop. Some selling of wheat was based on bearishness of corn and oats mar- Xkets.
