LIBERAL, Kans., April 27.—Deaths of six persons this week were at- tributed to duststorms tonight by Red Cross officials as headquarters here pushed relief work in the Nation's 18,000,000-acre “‘dust bowl ” Three deaths today at Beaver, Okla., were added to one earlier this week at Walsh, Colo, and two in Seward County, Kans. All were victims of pneumonia which Red Cross nurses said was ag- gravated by the dust. Some physi- cians call the condition “dust pneu. monia.” Few, however, have pub- licly expressed belief the storms have been more than merely a contributing cause in deaths. Emergency hospitals are in oper: tion at Walsh and Springfield, Colo., and Dr. William Dekleine, national Red Cross medical director, said others will be set up as fast as they are needed Health Program Planned. Liberal Monday with health repre- sentatives of Kansas, Colorado, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas to dis- cuss a health program. At Beaver, where Mrs. E. L. Fickel, prominent Oklahoma clubwoman; Leah Isaac, 7, and Mrs. Frank Ridge- | way, 43, died, a hospital was reported filled to capacity with other penu- monia sufferers. Beaver is in the Northwestern Ok- | lahoma Penhandle, one of five sec- tions comprising the so-called dust belt. The others are the Texas Pan- handle, Northeastern New Mexico, Southeastern Colorado and extreme Western Kansas. Outside the dust belt, St. Louis and Fayetteville, Ark., reported blowing silt today. Volunteers Make Masks. As dust continued to blow in the affected Colorado and New Mexico | sectors, emergency relief activities ! were in full swing. | _ The sweater-knitting qays of the |World War were recalled at Topeka and Wichita, Kans., where woman | volunteer workers were turning out 10,000 cloth masks for Red Cross headquarters here. Officials said at * | least 100,000 are needed. FORT MYER SHOW SET Army Relief Benefit to Be Held Memorial Day.
