(AFTER EARLY RISE iLeading Metals, Industrials Remain Steady to Firm Late in Session. BY VICTOR EUBANK, Associated Press Finaneial Writer. NEW YORK, April 24.—The atock market, slewed down in its trading pace during late dealings todav, but earlier advances of fractions to more than a point were well maintained. At the beginning of the final hour leading metals and industrials. inclnd- ing aircraft shares and utilities, had leveled off a trifie under the earlier peaks, but the tone of the market re- mained steady to firm Shares holding early gains well in- cluded Howe Sound, American Smelt- Douglas Aircraft, Sperry, Lig- gett. & Myers, Union Pacific, Consoli- dated Gas and American Telephone. General Motors and Chrysler held about even. Announcement that the Chicago Board of Trade would remain closed today because of a petition of the Rosenbaum Grain Corp. for reorgan- ization caused only slight nervous- ness in the share market. Reflecting a further advance of 134 cents in the price of foreign bar silver to 71% cents an ounce, mining sharq assumed top ranking position at tig start and after a little coaxing brougly rails and industrials into line. Utiliti rested during the forenoon, but can to life around midday, under leadersh) of Consolidated Gas, and Aircral stocks perked up about the same timy Commodity markets lent little en couragement to stocks, however. Th opening of the Chicago Board of Trad was delayed by the situation centerin, around the Rosenbaum Grain Corp and the nervousness of traders was re flected by substantial losses in bot. wheat and corn in such outside ex changes as Minneapolis and Winnipeg The bond market displayed firmnes and another sharp rise in silver cur- rencies featured foreign exchange trading. Leading shares gaining from around 1: to a point or more included Cerrc de Pasco, United States Smelting, Howe Sound. American Smelting, Consoli- dated Gas, Commonwealth & Southern preferred, American Can. Du Pont United States Industrial Alcohol American Commercial Alcohol, Lig« gett & Myers “B.” McKeesport Tin Plate and American Chain. In the aircraft stocks heavy buying centerec in Wright Aero, Douglas Aireraft, Boeing, United Aircraft and Sperry, | all of which were 1 to 3 points better. Such standard shares as United States Steel, General Motors, Loew, J. 1. Case Public Service of New Jersey, Ameri- can Telephone, Union Pacific, Santa Fe, New York Central and United | States Steel showed smaller gains. UNITED CORP. REPORTS. NEW YORK.
