WSCONS e’ PROB RIEILED University Students and Faculty Denounce and Poke Fun at Plan. By the Assoclated Press. . MADISON, Wis, March 8-De- nunciations and jibes were flung at the propoed Wisconsin Senate investi- gation into radical activities at the University of Wisconsin here last night at a mass meeting of univer- sity students. Speakers for student religious groups shared the platform with members of the progressive, Com- munist, Socialist and Democratic | parties, and faculty, unemployed and labor groups. “I am in sympathy both with those who treat the matter as a joke and with those who regard it as a men- ace,” asserted Prof. Ralph Linton, university anthropologist. Menace Against Freedom. “It's a joke,” he added, “because we all know the students are so con- servative they make members of the steel trust look like communists. It's & menace because it is diagnostic of attempts all along the line to repress freedom of thought and action.” He said that in Fascist countries research in all the sciences is down and out because of repression of | thought. | “This investigation is an assault on the whole principle of the free mind,” he declared. Cecil Crews, representing the Na- ||— tional Student League, said the late Senator Robert La Follette, sr., would be allied with opponents of the probe if he were alive today. | ‘Welcomes Investigation, Prof. Philo Buck of the literature | department said he thought the | faculty was not taking the investiga- tion very seriously, but that if any- | thing, it welcomes it. | “We want the State to see that a university without freedom is not a university at all,” he said. Prince, one of the defense attorneys, told the jury yesterday that he had not called the prince—in reality Harry Gerguson, former pants presser—because “Mrs. Gould is a charming‘and enticing woman,” and the prince “fell for her.” “He is not the first to succumb to the wiles and charms of this wom- an,” added Prince.
