U.S. BONDS TURN UPAFTER SLUNP Recover All But Small Part of Early Losses—Trad- ing Is Active. By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, March 8—Active dealings in the United States Gov- ernment list and a considerable num- ber of corporate issues contributed to a sizable volume of business in the bond market today. Federals got off to & poor start, but the early losses were cut and at the start of the last hour values were only & shade under the previous closings. ‘While a bit uneven the general list | had a fairly steady undertone. Weak- ness cropped out in some of the rails, but this was counteracted by moderate | gains in other carrier loans. | Higher prices were paid for many of the utilities and industrials. North American Aviation Reports $206,921 Surplus By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, March 8—North American Aviation, Inc, in its an- nual report last night showed a 1934 surplus of $206.921, which came from a profit of $1,268,293 resulting from the sale of securities. Without the securities sale profit the net loss for the year would have been $1,061,371. A statement to stockholders said *“conditions are not such in the air transport industry as to encourage your company to continue indefinitely in the air transport business unless more reasonable legislation is ob- tained, not only removing the present restrictions embodied in the airmail | act of 1934, but also offering reason- able encouragement for the natural growth of this business * * *.” B —— INVESTMENT TRUSTS NEW YORK. G. H. Dorr, president of the Cotton Textitle Institute, commenting on the report of the Federal Trade Commis- sion's study of investments, earnings and rates of return of 409 companies in the spinning, weaving and finish- ing divisions of the cotton textile in- dustry, issued the following state- ment: “The report of the Menl ‘Trade Commission serves to emphasize again the distressing plight of the cotton textile industry. “With increased labor costs, losses in both export and domestic markets to low-cost foreign competition and the heavy processing tax, the industry which made some profits in 1933 and in the first half of 1934 chiefly as the result of appreciation of inventories, has, since July of that year, been operating in the red. “The report covers the financial status of 409 companies engaged in the spinning, weaving and finishing of cotton yarns and fabrics, showing these companies to have lost money in July and August, 1934, at rates of from .17 per cent annually for weaving and spinning companies to 8.57 per cent annually for dyeing and finishing companies. That record is typical of the industry as a whole and unhappily, as we believe will be shown by further studies of the commission now under way, losses continued dur- ing the last half of the year, while op- erations during the first two months of 1935 were even more discouraging.” e EXCHANGE WEIGHS FLOOR RULE PLANS Brokers Are Asked to Submit Suggestions to Commission by This Week End.
