A—12 “BALN" SUITS BAN BILL IS APPROVED Indiana Woman Legislator Hears Futile Attack in State Senate. By the Assoctated Press. INDIANAPOLIS, March 8—In- diana’s woman legislator who believes her sex showd not have the right to institute “heart balm” suits is about to see her ideas written into law. Representative Roberta West Nichol- son sat &t a press table in the Senate of the Indiana General Assembly last night receiving congratulations after that body approved her bill, 31 to 15. Only House concurrence in amend- ments and the signature of Gov. Paul V. McNutt remain to place the meas- ure in the statute books. Restrictions Proposed. The law will prohibit all civil causes of action for alienation of affections, for criminal conversation, for seduc- tion of any woman over 21 years of age and for breach of promise to marry. It will fopbid the naming of the co-respondent in divorce cases ex- cept at direction of the court. Mrs. Nicholson, mother of two chil- dren, became interested in politics at the instance of her father-in-law, THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON, D. She listened composedly last night as she heard her measure attacked by Senator William P. Dennigan, Vin- cennes Democrat, who asked the Sen- ate if “you will help women by taking away their civil rights against philan- derers and men who prey upon them.” Since her bill was introduced in the Indiana Legislature, similar measures have been brought forward in several other States. WALKOUT IS AVERTED IN ALUMINUM INDUSTRY Existing Working Agreement to Remain in Force Until New One Is Drafted. By the Assoclated Press. PITTSBURGH, March 8—The pos- sibility of a walkout in the aluminum industry disappeared yesterday as me- diators announced the existing work- ing agreement will remain effective until & new one is drafted. A strike, which would have affected C., about 10,000 workers in six States, | was threatened after the expiration yesterday of an agreement made with the Aluminum Co. of America to end & walk-out six months ago. After a day of meeting first with company officials and leaders of the National Council of Aluminum Work- ers, P. W. Chappell, conciliation com- missioner of the United States De- partment of Labor, said: “It has been agreed that the present contract bétween the aluminum com- pany and its employes * * * shall re- main in full force until a mutually satisfactory revision of the same has been effected.
