Scientists still are scratching their heads over the strange mystery of the | disappearance of the eel grass thatl once abounded in coastal waters, and some predicted it would furnish al wild life puzzle rivaling the vanishing | of the wood pigeon years ago. Many now living recall the days when the wild pigeon flew in flocks that literally shut out the sun. Hardly a survivor now is left. 34x18x12 .. 20x15110 . . (Fifth Ploor. The Hecht Co.) Cause Matter of Conjecture. .For three years now scientists have watched the eel grass vanish and their studies have only confirmed the fact that it is rapidly going. The cause is just as much a matter for con- jecture as it was when disappearance was first noted in 1931. The eel grass has quite a few com- mercial uses; it provides shelter for many kinds of fish and shell fish and is a leading source of food for many kinds of waterfowl, themselves threat- ened with extinction. Clarence Cottam of the Biological Survey told the Biological Society of ‘Washington that the vanishing eel grass scrutiny—made by trained scholars—had not yielded a single definite clue. Shows Faint Signs of Return. He said recently the grass has begun to show faint signs of returning in some areas but in most places the shortage is still acute. The grass has died out not only along the Amer- ican East Coast but on the French Coast, the Eastern Mediterranean Shore and the Swedish and British Coasts. Disappearance of the grass, which grows in salt water, has been at- tributed to many causes, including sun spots, the changing position of the moon, changes in saltiness of the water and drought. It seems to be due to a disease, but scientists so far have not agreed even about that. 2,500 GERMAN WORKERS ON RECLAMATION JOB 1,000,000 Acres of Moorland to Provide 10,000 Land Set- tlers With Homes. By the Associated Press. MEPPEN, Hanover, Germany. Feb- ruary 23—The first contingent of 2,500 labor volunteers drove their spades into the ground Thursday to begin the reclamation of 1,000,000 acres of moorland with the ultimate object of providing 10,000 land set- tlers with farms. Vast and sparsely populated stretches of treeless moors in the Reich are to be developed for farming purposes. The first task will be drainage and road building, so as to open up com- munications between isolated vil- lages, access to which is often -cut off entirely during the Winter season. Workmen are living in barracks erected on piles driven into the boggy soil. After April 1 their number wil! be increased to 4,000. The entire reclamation scheme will take 10 years, it is estimated.
