Dr. David White, senior geologist of the Geological Survey and one of the foremost experts in the world on the beginnings of ancient life, died early uxi;y at his home, 2812 Adams Mill roa: Dr. White was 72 years old. A native of Palmyra, N. ¥., and llumnus) of Cornell University, he came to the Geological Survey in 1886 and has been associated with this scientific branch of the Government ever since. He also has been an associate curator ! of the Smithsonian Institution, an as- | isociate of the Carnegie Institution, a | member of the National Academy of | Sciences and for a time its home secretary, and is the author of a great number of publications on geological and paleontological subjects. Of late years he has received a con- siderable number of both American and foreign decorations for his re- searches—especially in the flelds of coal and petroleum. Both industries, as they exist in the United States to- day, are largely dependent upon fundamental facts uncovered by the work of Dr. White. For the past few years he has been engaged primarily in studying evi- dences of the earliest traces of life on earth, going back beyond the Cam- brian geologica! period, a half billion years ago. to the largely unknown and supposedly lifeless rocks dating from the pre-Cambrian. He was engaged, more than any| | other scientist, in trying to unearth the vast lost past of life on earth in the countless millions of years that | it must have existed before it reached | the highly specialized state of the trilobites and other sea creatures of the Cambrian, who were the first to leave fossil evidence of their existence. One of *he latest and most exten- sive of Dr. White's works was under- taken in the Grand Canyon in co- operation with the Carnegie Institu- tion. For his work on ancient life | traces he recently received the Wal- | cott Award of the National Academy of Sciences. Dr. White, it was said at the Geo- logical Survey, died in his sleep He | had been in failing health for several years. MRS:HENRY D. COOKE| EXPIRES AT NEWPORT Widow of Banker Was Sister of | Col. H.
