THE EVENING ST AR, WASHINGTON, D. C, THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 7, 1935. By the Assoclated Press. Moving day may come again soon for the age-yellowed Declaration of In- dependence and the Constitution of the United States. But where these two most treasured relics of the Nation will rest next is not yet decided. They now are housed in the Library of Congress. The recently created National Ar- chives Council is empowered to trans- fer them to the new $10,000,000 Ar- chives Building now nearing com- pletion, along with tons of other Gov- | ernment records now scattered all over ‘Washington. Many other Federal institutions, in- cluding the Library of Congress, how- ever, are eager to be the custodian Final decision rests with the new Archives Council, which is composed of members New Archives Council to Decide Home for Original Constitution of the cabinet, the chairmen of the Senate and House Library Committees, the librarian of Congress, the secre- tary of the Smithsonian Institution and the archives of the United States. Hidden From British. During the last century and a half the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution have had several homes. When the British advanced on Washington in 1814, the Secretary of State sent the Declaration by a trusted clerk to Leesburg, Va., for safekeeping. Later, for many years it was on ex- hibition at the Patent Office. Then it | was removed in 1877 to the State De- partment, only a few months before the Patent Office wing in which it had been stored was destroyed by fire. The Constitution also was on pub- lic view at the State Department for some time after 1877, but for the last decade both documents have rested in a marble shrine in the Library of Congress. Besides being the depository for val- uable Government records, the new Archives Building also is to become the storehouse of a great national collec- tion of motion picture and sound films to perpetuate for the future a record of contemporary American life. Private Films Included. From Hollywood the Government will receive for this new collection a great number of important private films of historic interest, in addition to current news and other pictures of an educational character, such as those with the Byrd Polar Expedition to the South Pole. ‘The sound recordings also are to include all the radio broadcasts made by the President and other high Gov- ernment officials of the Federal Gov- ernment. Eight special fireproof vaults have been constructed in the Archives Building to house the collection.
