Miss Isobel Lillian Steele, in con- versations with Senate leaders, has ex- pressed criticism of the American Embassy in Berlin for what she con- siders its Jack of helpfulness during the four months she was in a German prison on charges of treason brought | by the Nazis. i During a brief visit here, Miss Steele talked with Chairman Pittman of the Senate Foreign Relations Com- mittee and with Senators Borah and Clark. Miss Steele believes Senator Borah was largely instrumental in effecting her release, and one object of | her trip to Washington was to thank him. | “Not once during the long weeks I | spent in Moabit Prison, in Berlin, did | any one from the embassy come to see | me,” said Miss Steele. “I feel that if | the embassy had shown more active | interest, my release would have come | much earlier. Perkins today completes 44 years of continuous service with the Government, the first few years of | which were spent as clerk in the post office at Macon, Ga., and more than 38 years with the Post Office Depart- ment here. Mr. Perkins will retire actually Feb- ruary 28, following a vacation, but his last active duty is today, the anniver- sary of his entrance into the service. He was born in Tennessee in 1867. He was transferred to the Post Office De- partment here as a clerk in 1896. Mr. Perkins is a graduate of the old Columbian College, now George Wash- ington University, where he received a bachelor of laws degree in 1898, and from National University in 1899, re- ceiving the degree of master of laws. He was admitted to the District Bar the following year. In retirement he expects to divide his time between his home in Prince Georges County and his orchard in the Shenandeah Val- ley, Va. - - RUMMAGE SHOP TO'OPEN St. John’s Episcopal Church Will Aid Orphans. St. John’s Episcopal Church will open its “rummage shop” Thursday, February 14, for the sale of antiques, books, silver, chinaware, clothing and blankets for the St. John’s Orphanage fund. The shop is located at 821 Sixteenth street. Headed by Mrs. W. A. Hayes, the committes in charge has planned for the shop to be open on the second Thursday of each month, instead of holding an annual rummage sale. C. HECREATION Friendship Citizens Propose Merger of Playground Facili- ties Under Commission. A resolution asking that all recrea- tional facllities in the District be consolidated under the Commissioners ‘was passed by the Friendship Citizens’ Association last night. The resolution suggested that the office of co-ordinator of recreation be established, with authority over all recreational facilities. Through this office all permits would be issued, buildings and equipment secured and accounts of all departments would be centered there to reduce overhead. It was also suggested that the co- ordinator's office submit consolidated budgets for the various departments under it, and that all personnel neces- sary for its operation be secured through the Civil Service Commission. Declaring the responsibility for the school system rests finally with Con- gress, C. D. Franks introduced a mo- tion, passed by the association, to petition OCongress to make an inde- pendent study of the public school system in the District in regard to safety of the pupils, heating, lighting, equipment, condition of buildings and overcrowding. It was also asked that this survey disclose what percentage of the burden of educating Washing- ton children was assumed by the parochial schools. Restoration to the District appro- priation bill of funds necessary to maintain the highway testing labora- tory was asked in another resoluti According to members of the associ tion, work that this laboratory would do is now done by the Bureau of Standards at greater expense than if !heuum were made by the District itself. A proposal to legalize gambling in Washington was tabled. Opposition to the proposed abolition of the bur route from Wiscensin ave- nue and Fessenden street to Zigl eenth and Pennsylvania avenue was was sent to the Capital Transit Co.
