EXCHANGE RETAIN . DAVIS AS COUNSEL Gets Aid in Connection With 11-Point Program of Commission. By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, February 7.—The Stock Exchange has retained the legal services of John W. Davis, former Democratic presidential candidate and noted constitutional jurist, in connec- tion with the 11-point program for stock exchange administration re- forms proposed by the Securities and Exchange Commission, it was learned today. The move was viewed with the greatest interest in brokerage circles as a further step in the rather con- fused controversy which has been in progress here ever since the commis- sion made its “suggestions” in regard "1to administrative procedure, includ- ing methods of electing exchange offi- cers, with the hope that they would be “voluntarily” adopted by organized securities markets throughout the country. At least one exchange member had vigorously attacked the recent action of the Association of Stock Exchange Firms in indorsing the commission’s proposal, and he was generally re- h garded as the spokesman for a con- siderable group who were of like mind in the matter. The Stock Exchange itself has only referred the communication from the commission to its Law Committee for study, and has taken no official ac- tion. —_— BITUMINOUS OUTPUT SHOWS FURTHER RISE The National Coal Association, from incomplete car-loading reports from the railroads, estimates bituminous coal production in the United States for the week ended February 2 as ap- proximately 8480,000 net tons.
