CARS,ROCKS TOWN Dynamited Trestle Crumbles" Beneath Train, Plunging | It Into Deep Ravine. By the Associated Press. SPRINGFIELD, I, January 7.— A dozen cars in a Chicago & Il- linois midland train were plunged into a ravine north of here early yesterday as a dynamited trestle crumbled under them. Sheriff Luke Gaule said the blast was apparently touched off by pro- fessional bombers. It varied in tech- nique from the four or five recent similar bombings of coal cars which have been attributed to an inter- union vendetta among coal miners. In the absence of statements by | railroad officials, Sheriff Gaule pre- dicted the damage would total “at ieast $50.000.” None of the train crew was injured in the blast. Investigators said the engine, tender end eight cars had passed over the trestle, two miles southeast of Can- trall, before the explosion shattered the superstructure. In the heap was @ tank car filled with gasoline, which made salvage work hazardous. The blast. which shook houses in Cantrall, completely demolished the 60-foot span. Deputy Sheriffs said the bombers had apparently rigged up an ingenious mechanism on the trestle “which permitted the weight of the train to touch off the dynamite.
