RASING OF 01D IHRSHP PLANNED Historic Massachusetts 14 Years in Mud of Gulf of Mexico. By the Associated Press. PENSACOLA, Fla, January 7.— Heave ho—up from Davy Jones’ locker is to come the old battleship Massa- chusetts, This historic old battle wagon of the seas, credited with ending the career of Oquendo—pride of the Span- ish navy—was shelled to the ocean floor by the tactical salvos of Navy gunboats. It has lain in the mud for 14 years. In November, 1920, the battler was towed from Philadelphia to a point 2 miles off Santa Rosa Island, in the Gulf of Mexico. There it was anchored and allowed to founder. Before its hulk was battered in | target maneuvers, the ship served as & sort of liquor clearing house. Rum Spring runners would cache their wares on the ship in the dead of night, and boats from the shore would go out to pick up the liquors to evade customs patrolmen. Stripped of its gunnery, boilers and machinery, the Massachusetts lay half on its side, a ready target for the gun- boat broadsides, and hurtling = de- structive missiles from planes of the naval base here. Its guns played a major role in the capture and destruction of Cervera's Spanish squadron as ships tried to run the gauntlet of the United States fleet from Santiago Harbor. Bids for removal of the ship have been announced by the Navy De- partment. The Massachusetts will be lifted from the ocean and dismantled —a ghost of one of the United States prided sea warriors.
