NEW YORK, December 4 —Reduc- tions outnumbered advances among the price changes made last week in | the markets for heavy and fine chem- icals, but none of the changes in either direction was substantial, the Oil, Paint and Drug Reporter will say in its December 3 issue. The holiday emphasized the prevailing dullness, and there were indications that the year-end quiet had already set in. Some improvement was noticeable in the interest of the automotive indus- try in solvents. Higher prices were quoted on tung- state of soda, Manila copal gum and corn sirup. Quotations were lower on calomel, corrosive sublimate, codliver oil and a few domestic organic ferti- lizer materials. Contract prices were | extended on caustic potash, sulphate | and sulphide of zinc, formic acid and | coal-tar intermediates. Schedules were waited on chemical paint colors, coal- tar solvents and oxalic acid. The Reporter's composite index number oi prices for heavy and fine chemicals remained, for the fifth con- secutive week, at 1255 (compared with August 1, 1914, as 100). In com- parison with average prices in 1926’ (as 100), the Reporter's index number | is now 88.8, against 90.0 at this time last year.
