ITH two exceptions the ! Washingion clubs during 1935 are going to stand pat on their golf courses as they are at present being played. And in one of the two exceptions the course itself, insofar as shotmaking is con- cerned, will be the same layout as that | which has been in use since 1919.. Chevy Chase and Army-Navy are the only golf courses around Washing- | ton where extensive improvements are in progress. The first-named layout, one of the finest in the East, will be- come even better when the fairway watering system now being installed is put mn operation in the Spring. But | at the Army-Navy Country Club a number of major improvements, in- cluding several new holes, are being made. The changed course will be | in use nest year, with improvements on the back nine, which has in it sev- eral v fine golf holes At Columbia a new seventeenth green | has be same location as it has been for many years, and the shot will be the same. Congressional plans no new holes, nor does Indian Spring, one of two courses around Washington where nothing has been changed since it was buiit in 1 The other layout where the | years have seen no changes is Burning Tree. That rugged course which, if it | was trapped up, would become the finest in this section, is going along with the same impressive and testing greup of holes. Fine Group of Courses. NE could search a long time and find no better group of golf courses anvwhere than those around Washington. Back in the' vears when several of the clubs now in operation were being organized. among i them Congressional. Manor, Burning | | Tree and Kenwood, course architecture | 4 was at its best, big salaries were be- | ing paid the impresarios who built | the layouts over which duffers struggle today, and money was spent lavishly on golf course construction work. That | work stands good today with small | changes and will need no change for years to come, From the rolling fairways of the | | Washington and Bannockburn courses, | to flat reaches of East Potomac and ! Anacostia Parks, the National Capital has a fine collection of golf courses, offering a diversity of shotmaking such | | as is seldom seen around one city. | All the courses are good, and the need | for frequent changes doesn't exist. The clubs are prosperous enough, but | with curtailed incomes they fectly willing to stand pat on \\hal they have—which is good enough.
