BY EDWARD C. STONE. Sir Willmott Lewis, the dis- tinguished journalist who has been the Washington correspondent of the London Times for many years, ad- dressed the members of the Bond Club of ‘Washington at the Carlton Hotel this noon. It was the club’s first meeting of the Winter sea- son. Sir Willmott discussed various economic matters of great interest both to this country and Eu- rope. A keen student of inter- national finance, he presented many ideas of special value to the Bond Club nembers who are keeping their fingers as closely as possible on the investment pulse and at the same time irying to sauge 1935 prospects. James P. Nolan of Folger & Nolan, president of the club this year, pre- sided. More than 75 members and guests were present at the luncheon. The enthusiasm indicated that the bond men sre much more cheerful than they were at this time last year and are looking forward to steadily increasing business. In addition to President Nolan, the officers of Bond Club include: James H. Lemon, vice president; Karl R. Kurtz, secretary and treasurer. These officers, together with L Clark Brown and T. C. Montgomery make up the Executive Committee. 50,000,000 Accounts Insured, The Federal Insurance Corp.'s re- port that 14,004 banks on October 1 were carrying insurance on 44 per cent of their deposits, at the same time fully insuring the accounts of 98.4 per cent of their depositors’ ac- counts, has aroused much interest here. The figures, which cover all but 163 insured banks, show total insured deposits amounting to $16,188.317. 000, as against uninsured deposits ag- gregating $20,277.446.000. The num- ber of fully insured depositors totaled 49,800,398, while 809,509 depositors had their accounts partly insured This is the first time that figures have been available on the actuai number of depositors having $5.000 or less to their credit, the maximum insurable deposit. and the number having in excess of $5.000. Less than 1.5 per cent of the depositors in in- sured banks other than mutual save ings banks have deposits of more than $5.000. The ratio of insured deposits to all deposits was 42 per cent for national | banks, 32 per cent for State member | banks of the Reserve System, 72 per cent for other State banks, 88 per cent for mutual savings banks hav-|{ ing maximum insurance of $5.000. and 68 per cent for mutual savings' banks having maximum insurance of $2,500. Knappen Compares Recovery. Theodore M. Knappen of Wash- ington, one of the editors of the Magazine of Wall Street, presents an interesting comparison of British and American recovery in the current number. He says, in part: “Whatever else may be said about Britain's policy in dealing with the depression, this much is certain. The march of events pushed her off the gold standard September 20, 1931, and she was astounded to find herself still alive at the bottom of the cliff. More astounded still to find that the great leap had been positively beneficial. | ‘What all England fou against as an unmitigated evil turned out to be a blessing. “The United States. on the con- trary, deliberately abandoned the gold standard, and has been involved in a debate ever since as to whether that considered step was a fatal error or a great blessing. Broadly speaking, from the day of the departure from gold until now England has let nature take her ccurse, whereas the United States has undertaken to master fate. “Most Americans are sure that we are going to pull out of this depres- sion in due time, and a considerable margin of them believe that more sumptuous and opulent times are ahead than we have experienced in the most golden past. “In England, while there is satis- faction in solid revival. there is a well-founded feeling that it cannot g0 much further. The reason is that most thinking Englishmen attribute their measure of recovery to the ex- pansion of domestic products into the void created by curtailment of foreign purchases through protective tariffs and depreciation of the pound. They fear that ‘saturation’ of the home market has now been attained and that there is little likelihood of fur- ther recovery of domestic industry and trade.” Treasury Sale Impressive. ‘The Treasury’'s announcement of the closing of the books on the cash offering of $900,000,000 of bonds and notes to be issued on December 15, caused surprise and much favorable comment among bankers here. Sell- ing $900,000,000 in new issues in a single day indicates that banks and individuals were eager to get hold the new securities. Treasury officials said that it was the first time in four years or more that a bond issue had been entirely sold on the day of its offering. Books were closed on both the $450,000,000 of 3!z per cent bonds and the $450,- 000,000 of 1's per cent notes last night. As noted in the financial press today, it was the first large increase in the direct debt of the Government since June 15 and the amount of the new funds was somewhat larger than had been looked for in many financial quarters. Christmas Clubs Start Well. It was reported in the financial district today that the new Christmas Savings Clubs for 1935 are getting away to a fine start. While the banks have not advertised the clubs as ex- tensively as usual, the thrift habit appears to have a very strong grip on former members. Bankers report that many members of the past year’s clubs are joining the 1935 rolls. In some banks both the number of new members and the amounts sub- scribed are already ahead of the 1934 marks. The Federal Reserve Bank of Rich- mond reports that increased activity in the building trades in the fifth Federal Reserve district has prevented a drop in employment which is cus- tomary at this season of the year. Washington banks had a substan- tial increase in November bank clear- ings over a year ago. Baltimore now reports November clearings as $208.- 500,994, egainst only $169,659,348 in November, 1933. Market Averages 3 years ago High (1934). o192 ek ™| were about Aircraft Shares Take Lead. Other Favorites Rise 1 to 2 Points. BY VICTOR EUBANK, Associated Press Financial Writer. NEW YORK, December 4.—Stocks improved substantially today. Ad- vancing tendencies began in aircraft shares during the morning, but active demand developed in rails during the noon period. The late tone of the general market was firm. Advances of around 1 to 2 points were recorded by American Telephone, Santa Fe, United States Steel, J. C. Penney, Union Pacific, Western Union and Douglas Aircraft. Transfers approxi- mated 1,000.000 shares. | Shares of International Printing Ink jand General Printing Ink got up 2 | points each when the latter declared a special 30-cent dividend in addition to the regular. Worthington Pump preferred A advanced nearly 3 and J. C. Penney moved up 2. The Penney issue was up to a new 1934 peak, United Aircraft also reached a new high with a fractional xain. Wright Aeronautical firmed 3. while Douglas Aircraft, Aviation Corp. and Curtis- Wright improved fractionally to a point or more. Others up as much, included West- ern Union, International Telephone, American Telephone, Postal Telegraph preferred, American Can, U. S. Indus- trial Alcohol, U. S. Steel, General Mo- tors, Santa Fe, N. Y. Central and Union Pacific. Power company shares unchanged, as were the | oils and metals A number of special, extra and regu- lar dividend declarations helped to brighten the picture. Communica- tions stocks reflected optimism over the Federal hearings now in progress. The aircraft group found a following on expectations of Government con- sideration and continued gains in air traffic.
