By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, November 30.—Bank clearings again make a decidedly | better showing. The total for the 22 ' leading cities in the United States for the week ended Wednesday. No- vember 28, as reported by Dun & Bradstreet, Inc, was $4.176.754.000, against $4,083,000 for the same week {of last year, an increase of 2.2 per cent. This contrasted with a decrease At New York City, clearings were $2.- 622,806,000, or 5.2 per cent below tie amount a year ago, while the aggre- gate for centers outside of New York of $1,553948000 was 18.0 per cent higher. Not since the middle of September have clearings shown an increase over last year's. The reduction at New York City the past week from a year ago was small, while at Boston as well as most of the other outside centers, substantial gains appeared. Clearings for the last week of the month were as usual below those of the preceding week: for the past week the decline was $408.195 000, whereas a year ago for the same two weeks there was a reduction of $647.454.000 | Recent weekly statements have shown this same tendency. Notable gains in the past week appeared at Philadel- Detroit, Cleveland, St. Louis, Kansas City, | Baltimore, Atlanta, Louisville. New | Orleans, San Francisco, Portland and Seattle. NEW YORK, November 30.—Dis- tribution of merchandise was at a | slower pace in the last week, said the weekly Dun & Bradstreet trade re- view, mainly as a result of unszason- ably warm weather. “The gains reported for retail sales a week earlier,” asserted the sum- mary, “were narrowed substantially in some parts of the country, but con- sumer demand still is broadening in spite of the prolonged rainy spell “Stability undoubtedly has reachel firmer ground and nearly all factors are contributing to business recovery but there still persists too much un- settlement in many directions to per- mit indulgence in any rampant en- thusiasm regarding an accelerated | rate of progress during the remainder of the year. “Retail sales Central district in the East North continued to make progress, having the advantage of cooler weather, with the average about 10 per cent in excess of last week's and 12 to 15 per cent gr.aler than for the similar week last year “In the West South Central Statcs satisfactory gains were made during November, department store sales for the week rising 10 per cent ahov: the 1933 figures. “The devastation of the Summer's drought has left its traces on neariy all branches of business in the Norin- west Central group of States, and the warm weather and rain were not beneficial to the retail volume, but in neariy all lines the volume exceeded that of the comparative period for 1933 “There were more upward curves in the industrial indices this week, some of which have reached che hect position this Fall." —— International Hydroelectric System, class A share earnings mo ended September 30, were $1.63 We Pay \ 5% ON SAVINGS MONTGOMERY BUILDING AND LOAN ASSOCIATION, INC.
