NEW YORK, November 30.—Wool goods business continued active last week, according to the New York Wool Top Exchange Service. Further price advances on men’s wear woolen and worsted fabrics were recorded, bring- ing values 15 to 17': cents a yard above the lows for the season. These advances, said the service, failed to check the flow of new business “and instead forced laggard buyers to cover requirements.” Ci BONDS ON THE CURB MARKET. NEW YORK, November 30.—Auto- mobile manufacturers have finally given a much-needed boost to the steel industry and indications are that aggregate production for the full year will exceed 1933 by more than 10 per cent. After operations receded to the ex- tremely low level of around 23 per cent cf capacity in September, add- ing the final touch to a disastrous third quarter during which production was -he lowest since the first part of 1933, a slow but steady increase in demand has pushed operations up to the 29 per cent level and a still higher rate is predicted during De- cember. While the improvement in its earlier | stages was actuated largely by replen- ishing depleted “producers’ " stocks, a better inquiry from miscellaneous con- 5 |Sumers and substantial orders from automobile manufacturers have pro- vided the impetus within the past few weeks. If there is no setback during December, production for the full vear is estimated at 25,000,000 tons, which will compare with 22, 600,000 in 1933, a gain of 10.6 per | cent, or moderately greater than the | expansion in general industrial ac- tivity. ‘While the automobile industry is expected to hold its position as chief contributor to steel during the early months of 1935, or until production of new models is completed, larger takings are also expected from the agricultural and industrial machinery trades, the oil industry, tin plate mak- ers, and the all-important "mxscel-i laneous” group. Indications are that the latter class of users has fully elim- | inated the excess stocks accumulated | last Spring, and reduced ordinary in- business activity would call for a substantial amount of steel buying by this group. One of the most serious drawbacks *|to any sustained improvement in steel Expansion of | D. C, FRIDAY, sutput that would permit of profitable operations by the leading companies is seen in the continued subnormal takings by the railroads and the build- ing industry. A survey by Standard Satistics Co. indicates that unless railroads get substantial Federal aid in 1935 the amount spent for rails during that year will be less than in 1934, and the demand from the building indus- try will be greatly influenced by such Government agencies as the P. W. A. and the F. H. A, which have sup- plied the funds for most of the build- ing so far. INVESTMENT TRUSTS NEW YORK. November 30 (P.—New York Becurity Dealers’ Association: (Noon quotations.) Bid. NEW YORK, November 30.—Fac- tory fuel costs, through the use of new and efficient power equipment, | can be cut $750,000,000 a year. Power waste in the average factory today | runs from 20 to 50 per cent. These are the sort of arguments the proponents of industrial moderniza- tion are using today to get manufac- turers to look over their factories, many of which have not been im- proved, in any major degree, in the last five years. Their arguments come at a time | when several leading industrial Na- tions are threatening further to de- | preciate their currencies, hoping | through devaluation to obtain more foreign trade at the expense of the United States or Great Britain. Mechanical engineers, arriving here for their annual convention and the power show, say that, with banking assistance, many manufacturers within the next few months will get rid of obsolete power equipment or modernize it. How much power is the modern plant losing through inefficient dis- lrlbulmn“ Some engineers s: 15 to ‘Hls Best Friend Told Him It was his wife and she told him the truth. Their assertions are based on the fact that heat and power distribution through under- ground lines, housed in makeshift or wornout conduits, offers little, if any, protection and insulation. NEW YORK, November 30 —Sugar distribution in the United States for October amounted to 458,666 long tons. Raw sugar value, report B. W.
