" B—10 SWEDEN NOT KEEN - FOR BALTIC UNION Officials Indicate Preference for Handling Own Economic Moves. STOCKHOLM (#).—Renewed talk of | union of East and West Baltic states | fot purposes of economic self-sufficiency and economic defense has evoked only a lukewarm response from Sweden's | government. { Officials here indicated that Sweden, | Norway and Denmark still desire in the main to drive their own trade| bargains. Speaking on the subject, in the Riks- dag, Rikard Sandler, Swedish foreign | minister, indicated that a more definite program for such a union must be forthcoming before Sweden will bz will- | ing to consider the idea fermally. | Willing to Co-Operate. Minister Sandler said Sweden always | has cvidenced its willingness to operate with other Baltic nations. csp cially on cultural matters, and will con- tinue to do so. | Distinction must be made, however, he said, between a formal union by which the Baltic states would merely | help each other and a unicn Wwhich | would be interpreted as, or which would | take, aggressive economic action against | outside nations. ! “For a nation of Sweden's economic | structure, built upon a scattered world | trade, it is necessary to know in ad- vance whether such a union would in- terfere with our efforts to maintain a free trade policy,” he said. | League of Nations Part. Sweden's willingness to co-operate with other nations, Sandler continued, is evidenced by its part in the League of Nations and its membership in the Oslo_convention, the latter offering possibility for an extensive Baltic union and for a united front. if desired, at the World Economic Conference. Leaders of a Belgian trade delega- tion which recently visited Scandinavia brought new attention to the Oslo con- vention by stating that proper exploita- tion of the idea could give the conven- tion a “big nation” voice in the settle- ment of world problems. Talk of a Baltic alliance is not new. gince the nations involved have been variously joined in the past. After the thirty years war the Baltic was prac- tically an inland sea_in Swedish terri- tory. The International Congress on the | Industrial Work of the Mother, recently held in Paris, found an alarming in- crease in almost every country of work- ing mothers, Miss Mary G. Hawks, pres- ident of the National Council of Catho- lic Women and only American delegate to the congress, declared on returning to Washington. Miss Hawks was one of the speakers at the conference. | This increase in mothers engaged in | industry, Miss Hawks declared. has re- | sulted in greater infant mortality and | delinquency. | The delegations to the congress were | largely composed of representatives of social welfare organizations, Christian labor unions and associations of Chris- tian emplovers.
