FINANCIAE, TREND IS STRONGER - ONBOND MARKET Domestic Group Shows Fair, Number of Advances. Reich Issues Rise. By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, June 17.—The action of the bond market today was a con- siderable improvement over its reac- tionary performance of the last few sessions Domestic corporat: groups had a gen- erally firm tene, with a fair number of sharp advances. The forejgn list was featured by wide advances®in German issues. Gains in the obligat.ons of the Reich ran to as much as 9 points cn the news that continuance of full service on the Dawes 7 per cent loan had been agreed upon between representativs of the Ger- man long-term bondholders and Dr. Schacht, head of the Reichsbank. The Dawes 7s naturally enjoyed the maxi- mum upswing. Low-priced rails, on an apparent re- | mewal of buying interest, moved up all along _the line. Some loans of Mis- | souri-Pacific, Chicago & Northwestern, New York Central, Illinois Central, Santa Fe and St. Paul climbed 1 to 3 points. | Utilities in both prime and secondary | departments gained tome ground on a moderate turnover. International Tele- phone loans were strong features of the communications group. Gacoline and crude oil price advances helped to impart a firm tone to the oil issues. and most other industrial clas- sifications were slightly higher. United Drug 5s rose 5 points on a small transfer. | United States Governments again re- Mained within a narrow price zone, with Nthe Liberty loans displaying especial firmness. lNew York Cotton By the Asscciazed Press NEW YORK, June 17.—Uncertainty Yegarding cotton acreage plans was re- flected by further evening up of com- mitments and nervous and irregular fluctuations in cotton today. October contracts, after selling. off to ©.16 at the opening, rallied to 9'30, or within 5 points of yesterday’s closing quotation, but later eased off, closing at 9.19. The final tone of the market as barely steady, at net declines of @5 to 17 points. The opening was 14 to 22 points Jower in response to relatively easy Liv- erpool cables and scattering liquida- tion Early expectations of an announce- ment from Washington with reference to acreage policies after the close to- day caused nervousness. Later it was announced that publication of the pro. gram had been postponed. July sold up to 9.06 and December to 9.45, or about 13 to 17 points above the low- est, but the market eased again under yenewed liquidation, closing within 4 to | 7 points of the bottom. The opinion was expressed in some quarters that postpcnement of the acreage announcement might possibly foreshadow some modificaticn of inten- tions with reference to processing taxes. Part of the midmorning covering or pebuying was attributed to theory. Liverpool cables were lower than due on the New York close of Friday, and the decline there was attributed to continental liquidation and scattered Bombay selling. There was little comment on the teather, which, however, was consid- ered generally favorable except for drought conditions in sections of the Southwest. The amount of cotton on shipboard awaiting clearance at the end of the week was estimated at 213,280 bales, against 88,036 last year Open. High. Low. Close. Commodity Price Changes of Week McGILL, odity Service, Inc AUBURNDALE, Mass, June 17 (®).— Commodity prices during the last week | showed no disposition to halt the up- | ward movement which has continued | unabated for more than two months.| The index for all groups reached a new | high, now 20 per cent from the low last | February. Price strength was noted in the majority of industrial groups. well | illustrated by the fact that out of 14, nine advanced, three remain unchanged | and only two declined. | Industrial commodities surged up- | ward, reflecting higher prices for build- | ing materials, hides and leather. pamt‘ materials, paper and pulp, fine textiles | and vegetable oils. The bulk of the| price strength, however, took place in speculative commodities. Heavier buy ing represents not only inventory pro- tection against higher prices. but specu- lative accumulation for profit. Based on the degree of recovery in industrial activity and employment and purchas- ing power, only a part of increased | purchases are entering channels of con- | sumption or reaching the ultimate con- | sumer. i | Agricultural prices which at times | have been irregular averaged higher during the week. There is no way of determining at what level agricultural prices will stabilize, as administra- tion has not exhausted the pressure for higher prices under the farm relief bill and so-called inflationary measures. During the past week practically all of the grains advanced. as well as flaxseed. Live stock quotations, which recorded | a reactionary trend a week ago, were | higher during the week just closed. The | advance carries the index to a new | high. Cattle and sheep both averaged higher. Hides and leather continued to fea- ture all commodity markets by regis- tering the greatest proportionate ad- vance. This has been the case week | after week, and the advance now stands 89 per cent over the low of two or | ree months ago e ferrous. metals, after a broad advance, recorded a downward trend during the past week. Heavier pur- chases have rot made marked inroads in reserve stocks. Items which averaged lower were tin. silver and zinc. Coarse textiles represent the other group that was lower during the Wweek. Price declines in burlap and jute coun- teracted the advance in hemp. Fine textiles advanced to a new high Cotton has failed to maintain the up- ward price trend noted in recent weeks, | but silk has steadily advanced and wool Low. 10% Abitibi P & P 58 ‘58 80 Abram & Straus 618 25'¢ Alleghany Co 5s '44 19': Alleghan Alles hany Am Sm & Ref 5s 4 Am Sugar Ref 6s°37. 99 Am Tel & Teleg 4% 100 Am Tel & Telcltr 93 Am Tel & Tel deb 5. 215 Am Tel & Tel 536, s Am Tel & Tel 513543 4 -43 Mar 10213 1104 28 10612 Net Low.
