B—14 ARGENTINE ARTIST LAUDS U. . WOMEN De Quiros Pays Tribute to Their Charm and Infinite Variety of Type. The American bachelor. enjoys at feast some advantages that his proto- type in Buenos Aires does not have. And here are some of them as pointed out by Cesareo Bernaldo de Quiros,: painter, of Argentina, who says the | “American woman is the supreme fem- nine expression of our times.” The American bachelor, he explained, ean “date” a blond for a morning gal lop on the bridle path, take a titian: haired beauty to the afternoon races. and a lady with coal-black hair to the theater. He can talk as he would to a man with the ladies he “beaus” to tea, cock- | tails and dinner, and still sit back and enjoy the way her hair curls and the gestures of her slender hands. Advantages Enumerated. The advantages which this American | enjoys are pointed out by & man who 1s here for the prime purpose of study- ing American types of womanhood. Quiros will execute American comm sions for Sir Joseph Duveen, worl known art mentor, of London, a rel tionship which once existed between Duveen and John Singer Sargent. i “I was surprised on my arrival inj New York,” he says, “to see the man- ner in which women who once had | everything are accepting changed ma- terial conditions with practically no change in their brave and gay enjoy- ment of life. How do you Americans say it? She has ‘the stuff’ “Another thing—New York women seemed less frivolous than women of other nations. 1 feel that you can make & good friend of an American woman, sit down and talk with her as you would with a man, and still en- joy her charm.” Infinite Variety of Type. “Then, too,” he continued, “so many nations have made America that there is infirite variety of types. In South| America women are very beautiful, but they are just one type—the brunette. “The American woman is one that must be painted as a complete figure. Duveen first asked me to do just heads. But I insisted on figures so I could catch the beautiful, free motions of the American. You know, I am amazed at the freedom of women here. But they have handled it gracefully.” De Quiros is creating a stir with an exhibit here of South American “gaucho” or cowboy life, which he studied by living with the flery, aris- tocratic lords of the pampas. His style is a swing-back to the “grand man- ner” of Goya, Delacroix and Zuloaga, to whom he has been compared.
