Washington homes are suffering the annual invasion of Neoclytus acumina- tus, a variety of long-hcrn beetle com- mon in this part of the country. Neoclytus looks just like a small wasp, and the prospect of sitting down on a wasp is disconcerning to many, | who are consulting Department of Agri- culture entomologists. Acmllly this bug, one of the pests of the “fireplace age,” is not even remotely related to the wasp family, and can neither sting | nor bite. It frequently is found at this season in houses which burn cordwood in open fireplaces. The insect bores into cordwood in the open during the Sum- mer and lays its eggs. Usually it at- tacks only freshly cut surfaces. The val stage in the wood during the Win- ter, usually emerging as adults during the first warm days of early Spring. The heat of a hcuse brings them out a little sooner. Sometimes they ap- pear in great abundance newly Euilt heuses in which timber is used that has lain outside a long ti ‘The insect will do no damage and, says National Museum entomolcgists, the best way to get rid of it is merely to throw the windows open a short time on a warm day. It is trying to get outside anyway, since there is noth- ing in the house which it can eat.
