WOMEN"'S Bedtime Stories BY THORNTON W. BURGESS. Peter Freezes and Listens. The things you chance to overhear make things clear. May Burt but often make things cio ER RABBIT had frozen right E’a’herc he sat under a bush at the edge of the Green Forest where it is joined by the Green Meadows. This doesn't mean that Peter was cold, although it is true that little shivers were running up and down his backbone. It wasn't that km}i of freezing. When one of the little people of the Green Meadows or the Green Forest sits, stands or lies abso- Iutely still, so still that not a hair or feather moves, he or she is said to be freezing. It means simply that he is as still as ne would be were he frozen solid. Peter, who had been on the point of hopping out to speak with Jimmy Skunk, had frozen instantly when seemin; out of nowhere a Fox had appearcd and sat down directly in front of him. So near was this Fox that Peter could have reached .« and touched his tail. But you mag be sure Peter did ncthing of “that kind All that Peter could see of this unwelcome neighbor was his back, but there was something familiar about that. Yes, sir, there was something familiar about that back. “If I didn’t know that Reddy Fox left this section weeks a2o and hasn't re- turned I should be sure this is Red! thought Peter. “It must be one of his sons who has returned. “I'm glad it isn’ 2 But it was Reddy himself. He had turned just enough for Peter to have | a good look at his face. There was no other face just like that. There was ro chance of a mistake. You may be sure he froze the | Very best he knew how. He even held his breath as long as he could. If| Reddy should discover him now what would he do? What could he do? Just beyond Reddy was Jimmy Skunk. Jimmy was turning over big chips, sticks and strips of bark. * are the fat beetles?” asked Reddy. | “Good, when I get one, but few and | far between,” grumbled Jimmy. | “By the way,” said Reddy, “have you seen Peter Rabbit lately | “I saw him a few nights ago,” replied Jimmy. “A nice fellow, Peter, but with- out much sense.” “How so?” asked Reddy. “He doesn't know when he is well off,” mumbled Jimmy. ‘Meaning what?" asked Reddy. “He doesn't know enough to stay | here he is safe,” explained Jimmy. | “He has nothing to fight with. He is| just about the most harmless fellow of my acquaintance. All he can do is run, and he can't do that for a great dis- tance.” “And dodge,” sald Reddy dryly. “You forgot that.” “Yes, he can dodge,” agreed Jimmy, IF REDDY SHOULD DISCOVER HIM, NOW WHAT WOULD HE DO? “but that is all he can do. It is & won- der to me that Peter is alive. I guess he must be lucky.” “I guess you are right,” agreed Reddy, thinking of some of the times when it had seemed as if nothing but chance had saved Peter from him. “But if he would stay in the Old Bria tch he would be reasonably safe.” continued Jimmy. “He can find enough to eat there, and who wan! follow him under those brambles “Not I replied Reddy. “So Peter {sn't stayinz in the Old Briar-patch these nights>” 0" replied Jimmy. “Since you left these parts he has taken to wan- dering about in the most careless and foolish manner. It wouldn't surprise me to see him bob up any minute. As I d before, h2 is nice but he just hasn’t any sense. “I hope he wil replied Reddy. “Hope he will what?"” asked Jimmy. “Bob up any minute,” replied Reddy, with a grin. (Copyright, 1033.) ECENTLY an_1l-year-old girl asked me: “What is the sky? What is cn the other side of it The “other side” of the sky, if there is such a thing, has never been seen. In enclent times, people supposed that the sky was a roof or dome which covered the earth: but now we know that there is no roof around the earth. There 1s a blanket or layer of air around the earth, and in that air the clouds float about, pushed by breezes or strong winds. Last month there was much news in the papers about the visit of the Belglan professor, Auguste Piccard, to our side of the Atiantic. We read about this professor in 1932 when he mad? his second trip into the “stratosphere.” which is rather calm—but very thin and very cold—air more than eight miles above the level of the sea.
