B0 MOTOR DEATHS - RECORDED IN YEAR PMorwood, Mass., Ends 12 Months Without Fatal Accident. By the Assoctated Press. NOEWOOD, Mass, March 9.—A :flw of 12 months, without a single c fatality was chalked up by Nor- ‘wood recently. For many years this town of 15,000 which lies in the path of the main 4raffic artery betwen Boston and Provi- dence, R. I, has been & crusader sgainst motor vehicle deaths. A con- stant study of the problem, based on the premise that most accidents can be avoided, resulted in the record of & spotless year. Seven years #go, 10 died in automo- bile accidents within the town boun- daries, but that rate was whittled down and in 1931 only one died. In the office of Chief of Police Wil-| #lam H. Sullivan hangs a map of the town's streets. It carries clusters of blue dots, placed where accidents hap- med without injuries; red dots where fl:mm occurred, and gold stars where death made its entry. This map covers & 10-year period, although an individual map has been kept for this year. Map Basis For Plans. The 10-year map has been used as the foundation for building the plans for wving human life. Where the dots end stars were thickest, the curves were rounded, traffic lghts were in- stalled, visibility was improved and the points were marked for sanding in fweather when traction Was poor. Route No. 1, between Boston and Providence, bisects the town; it be- gomes. Norwood's main street as it winds into the congested area. At the entrance to the town's business district he driver faces a lane of overhanging Aghts, synchronized in a succession of n, yellow and red. Twice the State ordered the town =;hers to take down the lights, and ce the town officials got & stay of sentence. They finally convinced State thorities that the lights hihging §m‘e the street were more effective an those placed at the side of the d woad For two consecutive months the Na- #onal Safety Council put Norwood sec- ond to Billings, Mont., in safety results snd Town Manager C. A. Bingham says the rating was not fair. He says Billings ops Norwood merely because its pop- ulation is greater. “They forget to take into consider- xfion," Bingham said, “that 15,000 ma- ines pass through here in a day.” Won State Prizes. All departments in the city are con- wolled by Bingham, who takes his| Waffic seriously. Every department has | oncentrated in cutting down the num- ber of accidents. ‘When it snows, or rains and freezes, mhether it be day or night, trucks roll out of the town garage laden with loads | of sand to be spread at dangerous. ntersections and on hills. Saturday mornings the superintend- wnt of public works cslls his truck g:vers together for “skull practice.” e municipal truck fleet was a win- mer for 9 months out of 12 in & Btate- | wide safety contest. | The town authorities have listed 28 #teps which have been taken in their paign of safety. These include: mgnunan of a separate lane for trucks over the top of & hill on Route 1: overhead banners and posters bear- ing safety slogans displayed about the, town: safety magazines distributed to schools, libraries and waiting rooms; removal of obstructions to visibllity; widening of streets and building side- | walks in outlying sections, and eonstant | Tepainting of street markings.
