NEW YORK, February 1.—The most complete picture yet given of what cos- mic rays may be is issued by several | sclentists in the Phsical Review, s Journal of experimental and theoretical physics. ‘They may include the recently dis- covered “ultimate particle” of matter, the neutron, under a new theory of cos- mlc rays announced by the noted Bel. glan astronomer, Abbe Le Maitre, and M S. Vallarta of Massachusetts Insti- tute of Technology. They may also, under this theory. in- clude “new rays,” some form of invsi. ble radiation not yet identified by science. The theory holds that wril> some of them are undoubtedly electrificd g-mclu as Dr. Arthur H. Compton olds, others can be “photons”; that is, | high-powered invisible forms of light, | a8 Dr. Robert A. Millikan believes. | They probably, under the theory, in- clude a variety of rays, such as electrons, | or negative electrical particles, pmons or positive electrical particles; also alpha-particles, which are the hearts of helilum atoms, and neutrons, par- | ticles having no electrical charges. $18,000,000 in Radium. [ ‘The “new rays” are described as pos- sibly possessing greater masses and | higher electrical charges than any of | the known forms of radiation. | g The theory also shows that some form of “super-radio activity” may be {vn! of the sources of cosmic rays. Or- ‘amlry radio activity is {llustrated by the Empire State Building in New York | City. This building has been estimated | to contain in its stonework about $18,- 1 000,000 worth of radium, if every par- ticle of that substance could be ex- | tracted. This is sufficlent to send out | into the air thin charges of the rays of radium. But these radium charges about the Empire State Building are no greater than those bunched about the rocks on | most of the earth’s surface. In all cases they are insufficient to have any visible effect on man. Super-rad - tivity would come from the earth's at- mosphere or from space. | How far cosmic rays can travel is considered mathematically by F. | Zwicky of the California Institute of | Technology. One possibility is that the cosmic rays, if they are protons, are likely to come from non-luminous matter in space, dark bodies or collections of gases and dust which are not visicle like the stars and the nebulae. i Might Be Going Backward. Another possibility is that. if the univese is expanding at the tremen- dously rapld speed which great te'e- scopes seem to indicate, there is a limit in far-off space beyond which no light and no cosmic rays can come to earth. This is because in those remote regions the bodies emitting either light | or cosmic rays would be travelinz away | from earth with a speed greater than | that of light. So possibly the rays {rom them would have no ¥peed at all in the direction of earth, and might even be going backward. Still another mathematical possi- bility is that cosmic rays were emitted long ago, and have been traveling in vast circles in space. They keep going |1nd¢fln1!.€1\ in these circles until they ‘smkr something, as when they enter earth’s atmoephere. Another source of cricin could be ‘either the earth’s atmosthere or the nearby solar system Finally, &hey ‘mum be emitted by matter in’ states of extreme rarification unknown on | earth.
