Clearing House Association . Cuts Payment on Deuosits to 12 Per Cent. BY EDWARD C. STONE. ‘The Washington Clearing House As- sociation has reduced the interest rate on demand deposits in local banks to one-half of 1 per cent, the new ruling going into effect today. Up to today the prevailing rate had beea 1 per cent. Reduction to one-haif of 1 per cent! follows similar action taken by the New York Clearing House Association a few days ago whed the same cut was | adopted and is the same rate that now is in force in many other large cities in the country. The present condition of the money market is the reason given for adoption of the lower rate. Banks are finding difficulty in putting out their money at a sufficiently high rate to warrant the continued payment of 1 per cent, bankers state, until present conditions improve. Up to July 1, last, the rate paid here was 2 per cent on these checking accounts. The new rate has nothing to do with saving deposits in any . Another interesting item covers cash in the vaults of local banks. On De- cember 31 last cash in vaults totaled $8,239,000, in comparison with $8,181,000 on December 31, 1931, another gain dur- ing the year. The statement shows that Washington banks had total re- sources on December 31 of $316,263,000. The local banks have a total paid-in capital stock amounting to $22,815,000, the same as on September 30. BY GEORGE T. HUGHES. Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, February 1.—Consider- |ing the overnight news, the stock market | gave a good account of itself today. It | received calmly the unexpectedly large cut in the dividend in United States Steel preferred and, while there was ., | some selling in the steel stocks, the rest % | of the list was not materially unsettled thereby. The greatest interest attached at the opening to the market for United States .| Steel. On the Pacific Coast yesterday | after the dividend news had come out, | the preferred sold down some 4 points from the New York close and the com- mon down almost 2 points. The first sale today on the Stock Exchange was | at 5715 for the preferred, off 4'4 points, |and at 27 for the common, off 11 points. There was no large volume in either issue and after the initial trans- actions, prices rallied. | In the rest of the market American Telephone was depressed on suggestions that directors of that corporation at their meeting on February 15 might | follow the example of United States | Steel. Other active industrials were off a point to fractions but all without any increase in activity. After the first hour the shares moved up in response to the testimony of Joseph Eastman, Inter- state Cocmmerce Commissioner. before a | Senate Committee. For a time there was brisk buying of Chesapeake & Ohio, Delaware & Hudson, New Haven, and Louisville & Nashville, the latter setting a new high for the movement, These gains, however, were not entirely :)II:: and the LX{nflrke! had another re- | lapse as weakness appear ‘puglxc ulmiues. PR e onsolidated Gas was freely | North American, Public Sersice of R railway | Jersey, Columbia Gas and the other | once popular members of the group or less. The exe 10% — % | cuse given was prospect of rate cuts, voluntary or forced. Concern was ex- pressed over the dividend outlook in | 8 number of cases and, as always when | the market is reacting, many other un- | favorable stories were dug up. Just _before noon it was announced t i = 613 Avation Corp (Del).. | that Standar New Jersey amcunting to $1.821,000, against $1, 2 B ola ANarIOR ConD (e e Jat Peiate IRE DT B). ¢ Pavable in cath: or stock. T EIe 8 a st nn; 'd Oil of New Jersey had 398,000 following the September condi- tion call and $1,689,000 at the end of the previous year. Time deposits, including postal sav- ings deposits, were larger than a year 220, being $114.957.000, in ccmparison with $114.404,000 on December 31, 1931. Tota! deposits as evidenced in savings passbooks also revealed a gain during the year. On December 31, 1932, these deposits totaled $101,715,000, against the lower figures cf $101,527,000 on the last day of 1931. e wafhi ton for many months. In spite of a lower Government pay roll, savings have displayed surprising steadiness, the situation often drawing most favor- able comment from the city’s bankers. It is predicted that the coming swing back to more normal economic condi- tions will see a constant climb in sav- ings accounts, so often called ‘“the backbone of family prosperity.” Bache Office Is Opened Here. Business in the brokerage office cn the ground floor of the Washington Hctél opened today under the manage- ment of J. S. Bache & Co.. New York Stock Exchange firm, succeeding M. J. Meehan & Co ., another Exchange house which has ccnducted the office for the four_years. Franl: F. J. Thiel, who was manager of the former office, is in charge of the branch house under the new manage- ment. No change was made in the perscnnel and the day’'s business was moving along to all outward appear- ances as if there had been no shift cn the New York end of the private wires. Jules S. Bache, who founded the brokerage house back in 1892, was in Washington for the opening. The vet- | eran broker was on his way to Palm Beach to spend a few weeks at his Winter hcme. Another partner in the firm, who dropped in teday to look over the cffice, was S. M. Ottenberg, also from New York. i Both officials expressed the cpinion that the office here is cne of the mcst attractive of the 29 branches which are scattered all over the Eastern part of the United States. Bonds Leaders on Exchange. Bonds again led trading on the Washington Stock Exchange today in a quict session The new Washington Gas Light 5s appeared in the main list for the first time, following their listing by the board of governcrs yesterday. They were transferred from the unlisted de- partment Four $1,000 sales in this new issue were recorded, all made at 94%;, the price at which they changed 2 vesterday. This is also the price at which the bonds were originally of- ngton Railway & Electric 4s appeared on the board in a $1,000 sale at 91% and a small Washington Gas, A, bond moved at 100;. On the ide, 2 small lot of Potomac Elec- per cent preferred changed hands at 1071a, A glance at January shows that busi- ness on the local exchange was more than double what it was a year ago, an encouraging sign to say the least. The popularity *of the new $8,500,000 gas issue was largely responsible for the gratifying improvement. Heard in Financial District. Hanry S. Baker of Washington and Charles Town, W. The regu- lar 25-cent disbursement was ordered. Earlier in the day Standard of Cali- fornia had declared the regular 50- cent quarterly payment. Selling of Standard of New Jersey preceded the dividend news. After the announcement came out the stock weakened further, making a new low since the first of the year. All this unfavorable news | proved too much for the market as a whole and at noon the averages were down on the day. Still another unfavorable dividend announcement was received in the early | afternoon when Drug, Inc., declared a quarterly dividend of 75 cents a share, | putting the stock on a $3 annual basis, | against $4 previously paid.
