LARGE audlence that had the distinction of counting the renowned conductor, Bruno ‘Walter; the celebrated pian- ist, Walter Gleseking, and the famous singer, Mary Garden, amongst its members, was gathered at Mrs. Townsend's morning musi- cale yesterday to welcome Dr. Hans Kindler as cel- list and the English pianist, Myra Hess, in an interesting program. Dr. Kindler's appearance was e signal for an ovation, which attested the admiration he has gained through his splendid con- ducting of the National Sym- phony Orches- tra. His dutles in this role have occupied him so exclusively that it is rarely that the public has an opportunity to hear him in a field that has won him re- nown through this country, through Europe and in the Orient. It was a Dleasure to welcome him as artist, With the added honor and maturity that his conducting has given him. Dr. Kindler draws from his in- strument a tone of exceptional beauty. He has a technic that is faultless and which takes no notice of difficult stretches and goes on into the high registers with facility. The tone quality or intonation is never sacrificed, but retains its intrinsic beauty throughout. At times, however. one is disap- pointed at a lack of vigor in this tone, which has so much to give; while one is arrested by the richness of each tone, the value of the whole is not made impressive. The dra- matic outbursts are too few and the climaxes too short to give the neces- sary variety. “La Plainte,” from the suite by Caix d’Hervelols: Mary Howe's * tria” and the “Piece en Forme d'Une Habanera,” by Ravel, which he gave as encore, stood out, however, for their deep sentiment and the thoughtful interpretation he gave them. Myra Hess, who mneeds no intro- duction to Washington public, is & pianist who colors her powerful touch and fleet technic with a warmth of a temperament that never overreaches the proper bound- aries. The virtuosity of her playing is tempered with her intellectual concept and lack of the sensational and is such playing as few women have been able to develop. She confined her program to “Five Bagatelles” of Beethoven, which she gave with fine interpretation and refinement of style, and “Six Pre- ludes” by Chopin. In the last two of this group she was at her best, playing with brilliancy and sweep- ing freedom. Her own arrangement of a chorale by Bach. which she gave as encore. was impressive with the deep volume she achieved and the dignity of her handling of it. The Cesar Pranck “Sonata,” which Miss Hess and Mr. Kindler gave by request, was the number held in reserve, as it were, to bring out their combined forces. It was rather a pity that the more placid type of the preceeding numbers of the pro- gram had already established an atmosphere that crept also into the sonata. The different quality of tone of the two performers is too dissimilar to permit of perfect har- mony, and in certain moments of power Miss Hess' strength overbal- anced Mr. Kindler and eclipsed his tone. However, these passages were rare, as were also the high dramatic points, for both artists seemed in- clined to a more lyrical interpreta- tion. The audience was sincere in its applause and enjoyment of the artistry of both Miss Hess and Dr. Kindler. A E. Myra Hess. Dan Gridley Soloist With Eubinstein Club. THE first concert of the season of the Rubinstein Club, Claude Robeson directing, was given last evening at the Willard Hotel. The club had as soloist the well-known tenor, Dan Gridley, and was assisted in the choral numbers by Edith White, contralto, and Dorothy Sea- mans, violinist. The chorus made an attractive picture in pastel colors against a background “of green. The voices balance well in quality of sound with the sopranos having a range that makes light of high tones whether sung loudly or softly. The singing of the “Reve Angelique” of Rubin- stein, arranged by Gaines, was a masterly showing of tonal contrasts and was interpreted with sensitive feeling and reverence. Edith White's mellow contralto imbued the solos with fine sentiment, to which the soft strains of the violin obb.igato contributed a large share. The num- ber was repeated in part after pro- longed applause The religious character of the first group. by Gabert, and the Spanish rhythm and vivacity of the songs by William Lester were equally well sung with proper regard for the at- mosphere of each. The last num- ber, “Nymphs and Shepherds” by Vibbard, in which the violin obbli- £ato was again plaved by Miss Sea- mans, was followed by a final encore. The lyric tenor of Dan filled the hall with resonant s that never lost its velvet quality. His complete absorption in the varied sentiment of his numbers gave his delivery of them a poignant effect, and the response of the audience showed how well he had made their meaning clear. The dramatic aria from Andrea Chenier, “Un Di Alla- zuro Spazio,” rose to an unusual climax, and Mr. Gridley's voice por- trayed its emotion with a hint of tears in the moving phrases He had chosen a group of inter- esting songs in Italian and German, beginning _with Torelli's beautiful “Tu lo Sai” and having two compo- sitions by Richard Trunk, * gesang” “and _“Fruhlingssonne which the different moods pro 8 good contrast. He followed his English with several encores, one of which was sung especially for the members of the chorus and another exclusively for the gentlemen prefent, The accompaniment for bo chorus and Mr. Gridley was by Mrs. Adele Robinson Bush. A E. Delphine Desio, Cellist, In Church Recita JDELPHINE DESIO, cellist. gave a Terital last evening in the Mount Vernon Place Methodist Epis- copal Church before a large audi- ence. Miss Desio, who has studied and accomplished what she has wich the handicap of blindness, plays wita a rich warm tone of good size and excellent technic. She playeq a varied program including works of the classics, the moderns and ine writers of compositions in the 1 : vein.
