From the Front Row Reviews and News of Washington's Theaters. By E. de S. Cinema Train Coming to Washington. announcement that War- ner Bros. is to bring a whole trainload of cinema celebrities to the inaugural function, l’ep‘etew?fi}h Beu% E:r\zm arren ams_an {%ng and such-like has made the astutz Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer com- pany sit up and take notice. It has, tco, made the local and the New York and the Holly- wood L oew brethren sit up and take notice. With the r sult that Wash- ington will see a unique enter- prise. It will see, in other words, what is posi- tively the first talkie train —a train that speaks _volubly and celluloidly in terms of the movies. A train in which embryo movie stars may have their faces photographed, their voices recorded and their acting reproduced in the c.ear medium of the screen. A train on which there will be stars to show you how to act, and camera- men to show you what you look like, and technicians, who, when they press a button, will have the pleas- ure of seeing you “emote” the way they emote in the woolly regions of Hoilywood. This talkie train—the only one of its kind—is already unde: way. At the moment it is plying up and down the New England Coast, setting Back Bay afire, and reducing Cape Cod dwellers to a state of positive {renzy at the thought of suddenly being able to leave their fishhooks and get onto a train which may eventually launch them into & screen career. It is said that row upon row of ginger-haired ladies and cave-dweller gentlemen have shaken the sloth of years from them, and have gone to this train and been photographed and acted the way thev never acted before. The sound of this approaching train has turned villages upside down. and as the Hollywood whistle sounded in the offing and as the M.-G.-M. banner was whisked out of the caboose, <hopkeepers left their shops, drug ore cowboys left their corners, old maids left their knitting, and even the mayor put on his hat and went out to see what all the shouting was about. ‘This is the train that will come to Washington. It will be shunted | off somewhere on a permanent sid- ing. Here persons who are inter- ested to see how tests are made, how tests are recorded and how | tesis are filmed, will be offered that | Bette Davis. those who, lo these years, have fancled them- sister Garbo, or brother ., or’comedienne Pitts, will be llowed to reveal their inmost tal- s. A whole Hollywood crew is train. A director directs, a cameraman has his camera, and all vou do is step on, give yourself over to the wiles and guiles of the make- up artist, breathe in great clouds of make-up and prepare yourself for that exciting moment when you will be performing before a mute and dumb and practically invisible audi- ence After the test is made, your name is taken down in black and white, d later you are invited back and you may relax against Holly- d cushions and see yourself act cn a small screen which has been MELCHER rigged up at the far end of the car. It's an exciting business—th! Dbusiness of beginning inds” have alrcady bee “finds” have already been reported. There is, for instance, a black-eyed lady from Neponset who, it is said, Lodge) hardly stepped on to the train before they knew he was an- other Clark Gable. It remains for Washington to discover its Gables and its Dietrichs. There is one student, for instance, ‘we saw yesterday at Clifford Brooke's academy of the drama, who should get herself ready to board this train —she being the double of a particu- larly mellow and salubrious star who, it is said, is getting ready to le‘avx; the studios, never to return again. Walter Hampden Plays “Caponsacchi” Tonight. WALTER HAMPDEN will begin a brief three-day engagement at the National tonight, with “Caponsacchi.” Mr. Hampden will also be seen in this Friday and Saturday nights. He will present “Hamlet” at the Saturday matinee. ‘Washingtonians will be interested in the news that Laura Barrett of this city is a member of Mr. Hamp- den’s troupe. Miss Barrett has becn active in dramatic work of this city for several years. She is a graduate of American University, and was seen here last as Ariel in the Drama Guild's production of “The Tempest,” several years ago. “Design for Living” NG STAR, WASHINGTON, D. (Fourth Floor, The Hecht Co.) ‘Well Received by Critics. 'rflE sometimes cryptic New York critics have, as they say, “gone overboard” for the Noel Coward play, “Design for Living,” which Washington saw iast weck. Early reports on what prominent Man- hattan reviewers said include the following: Percy Hammond: “Miss Fon- tanne, Mr. Lunt and Mr. Coward slide through the slippery processes of ‘Design for Living’ in a way sug- gesting that it is good sport for them as well as thelr audiences. * * * Thanks to Mr. Coward's wieldy gift of gab, the give-and-take of their conversation is easy though calcu- lated- easured skirmishing,’ I think he cal's it. * * * Apt and funny observations follow one an- other in a rhythmic parade full of glib and meaty nonsense.” Richard Lockridge: “Noel Coward is at his brittle best in ‘Design for Living' a gay shuffing of light- hearted loves. He romps through all moralities, tweaking the noses of moralizers, and tells with unfailing wit of ‘three people who love each other very much.'” Brooks Atkinson: “It is one of the paradoxes of the theater that the most trifling things are often the most priceless. Skill, art, clair- voyance about the stage, ever erudi- tion of a sort, have gone into this gay bit of drollery. It is highly diverting for the evening thereof.” Buddy Rogers At !.M"l Fox Next Week. COP CURBS COUGH PRESERVATION PLANNED OF RUINS OF ABINGDON | | Home Where Nellie Custis Was! Born, South of Potomac, to Be Marked by Tablet. Preservation of the ruins of Abing- don, historic Curtis residence near lge Capitol Overlook, on the Mount Vernon Memorial Highway, will be undertaken immediately, Mrs. 'E. FRIEND VISITS HOOVER President Hoover yesterday renewed | an old friendship, begun at the Paris | Peace Conference more than 10 years ago, when he received in his office at | the White House the Marquess of Lo- | thian, Philip Henry Kerr, who was ac- compeanied by Sir Ronald Lindsay, the | British Ambassador. During the days of the Peace Con- ference, when Mr. Hoover and the Mar- | quess of Lothian became friends, the ! latter was secretary to Lloyd George, then premier of England. The British nobleman called at the ‘White House merely to have a chat with his old friend. Oil Croqmg_nolefl “I caught an over- | size cold while on duty.Icoughedand sneezed like a regi- | ment.
