By the Associated Press. NEW YORK. December 20-—Clar- jencc Eugene Whitehill, who looked like George Washington and sang before who was with the Metropolitan Opera House 19 years, expired in his home Sunday night, aged 61. Born in Marengo, Iowa, he was con- sidered one of that State's greatest con- tributions to the musical world. He was working as an express clerk in Chi- cago when he met Mme. Melba, a meeting that affected his whole career. With her aid, he found a patron to advance funds for his musical educa- tion. In after years he sang at the ‘Wagner Festival in Baireuth. He sppeared at the Opera Comique in Paris, the British National Opera in London and at Covent CGarden. In 1922 he sang before King George and Queen Mary. His first New York appearance was as Amfortas in “Parsifal” He left the “Met” when he had a dispute with Gen- eral Manager Giulio Gatti-Casazza last !May.
