-~ Y] % % i | | THE EVL\I\G STAR.. WASHINGTON, D. C., THURSDAY. DECEMBER 15, 1932. MLEAN GRANTED DIVORCE IN LATVIA Wife of Former Publisher of Post, However, Questions Action. By the Assoclated Press. RIGA, Latvia, December 15.—Edward B. McLean, former publisher of the Washington Post, obtained a divorce here last month, it was learned today. The date on which the decree was granted could not be ascertained, for the authorities have adopted a policy of suppressing details of divorces involving | notable foreigners. Attorney Issues Statement. Nelson T. Hartson, one of Mrs. Mc- Lean's attorneys, when asked to com- ment on the report from Riga, Latvia, that Edward B. McLean had secured & divorce from his wife, Evalyn Walsh | McLean, issued the following statement: “I have been authorized by Mrs. Me- | Lean to release the following statement | .her name: “ ‘Mr. McLean is now in the American Houplul in Paris, where he has been under treatment for three months as a result of a complete breakdown. I am acvised by my attorneys that Latvian divorce law requires the personal ap- pearance before the Latvian court of at least one witness who can testMy of his own personal knowledge to essential facts regarding the marriage of the parties. Obviously Mr. McLean could not have been in Latvia personally at | the time the divorce was' granted. and 0 far as I know, there is no.one in Eu- | rcpe who could honestly testify to the essential facts on which a divorce could be secured. From this, it is apparent that if the report is true that a divorce has been granted in Latvia, a fraud has been perpetrated on that court. My lawyers further advise me that the in- junction issued out of the Supreme Court of the District of Columbia last year is still in effect. This order spe- cifically restrains Mr. McLean and | his agents and attorneys from | prosecuting his Latvian' suit. The granting of any divorce in Latvia is, therefore, in violation of our court's order and would not be recognized by the oourts of this country. What steps I shall take, if any, must be decided on by my counsel. In Touch With Husband. “‘This report, if true, is a complete surprise to me. Since Mr. McLean en- | tered the American Hospital in Sep- | tember, I have been in constant touch | with Dr. Edmund Gros, head of the | institution. The hospital _authorities have been under instructions from me to give Mr. McLean every care and at- tention that his condition demanded. ‘The most recent reports from Dr. Gros | have been that Mr. McLean is still a very sick man and would require the utmost care for many months to come. My information is that Mr. McLean is now and has been for at least three mmthhlthclmmmemtthzn is somet lecidedly irregular about the whole MCLEAN IN HOSPITAL. Reported Improving From Neuritis and Breakdown in Paris, reported tods i hlve chtained a divoree at lun Latvia, is in the American Hospital here, whm}:hubemnplmt for the patt physician said he had been suf- lennl from neuritis and ru.ldovn but is improving and briefly ‘morn! outing two months. He probably will be at the hospital for another month, His attorney said Mr. McLean had made a persanal appearance at the Riga court at the time the divorce application wao filed a year ago, that he still has a residence at llkl and that he received confirmation through his local attorney that the divorce was upheld by the | Latvian courts. - ————————— | “ADELINE” IN COAL CHUTE| Policeman Finds Merry Longshore- man Stuck in Hole.
