Baptista, a member | of the Marine Band for 25 years, of | Sousa’s Band for a number of years and of the old Artiliery Band of St. Augustine, Fla., for about 5 years, who died suddenly Tuesday at his home, 313 Fifth street southeast. After funeral services at his home e body was taken to Arlington Na- nal Cemetery for a military burial The 65-year-old musician, Who re- tired in 1924, was the son of Antonia Baptista, who served for 30 years in the Marine Band, and a brother of John Baptista, whose record with the band covered a like period. He played clarinet and saxophone. Born in Washington. Born in Waskington, Mr. Baptista enlisted with the Artillery Band at St. Augustine as a young man. After sev- eral years of service he left the mili- tary organization to travel with Sousa's famous organization. His father had Plflyed under Sousa’'s baton when the latter was conductor of the Marine Band before he organized his own group and began his many Nation-wide tours. In 1859 he enlisted in the Marine Band. and stayed with that group until his jetirement in 1924. When he re- tired he held the rank of principal musician. During the World War he was a mem- ber of a special group picked from the Marine Band to tour the country in recruiting service. For this tour, which covered five months, he was given a | special letter of commendation by Maj. ’ Gen. John A. Lejune, commandant of | the Marine Corps. i Played in Orchestra. For many years he played with John Schroeder, whose orchestra was well known to patrons of the Raleigh Hotel dining room before the World War. He was a member of the Musicians' Union and of the Eagles. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Lydia M. Baptista, and two daughters, Mrs. James Ke‘t&):el’ and Mrs. P. L. Stin- | son. Howard, president of the International Tybographical Union, said last night unofficial returns from about one-half of the local unions showed a majority of 8,000 votes for the proposal to adopt a five-day week for the printers. He said, however, the official returns ‘would not be opened until December 17 and that he would not hazard a'pre- diction on the final outcome.
