THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON, FINANCIAL. FINANCIAL. D. C; THURSDAY, DECEMBER 15 1933. FRENCH BOND LIST . DECEINES FURTHER Belgian Issues Also Lower. | * Domestic Group Shows Many Gains. BY CHARLES F. SPEARE. Special Dispatch to The Btar. NEW YORK, December 15—What dooked 1like sentimental ¥rench and Belgian bonds today drove prices of these government issues down 1 to 2 points on a moderate amount of | offerings. French 7ls recently touched 1273 the highest ‘of the year, from Which they have now reacted 3 points. Bel- glan 6l5s and 7s were off today about 2 points from their quotations of last week. United Kingdom 5!4s and Cana- &m. Australian and German issues re firm. Italian 7s eased. Again there was notable strength in all of the premium U. S. Government 1ssues, of which 7 of the 10 listed are now at the highest prices of the year. The yleld on the long-term premiura bonds ranges from 3': to nearly 32 per cent. This fact explains the de- mand for them in the present money market, with the New York State 3 and 33 per cent bonds of the longest maturities offered today to return from | 8 rer cent to 3.15 per cent. The best gains in the domestic list were in several of the industrials that & short time ago dropped to approxi- mately the low prices of the year. United States Rubber 55 were up 2| points by midday after Wednescay's, tdvance of 4 points. United Drug 5s gained 1%, points. National Dairy Prod- | ucts 54s Tose a point. There were moderate gains in several of the sec- ondary grades of public utilities, such as Columbia Gas & Electric and Phila- delphia Co. 5s, and about the same amount of recovery in highly specu- 1ative issues of the type of Interna- tional Telephone & Telegraph and In- terborough Rapid Transit 5s. The high-grade rails, such as Atchi- son 4s and Union Pacific 4s, and pub- lic utllities like Consolidated Gas, American _Telephone & Telegraph, Duquesne Light and Public Service of New Jersey issues, were all strong. In the junior railroad list the strength and activity of Baltimore & Ohio 4!:s was the outstanding fea- ture. Illinois Central 43s and Chi- clfi) Great Western 4s each gained a point. HAVE BEEN SMALL * Shipping - and Insurance Firms Only Gainers in Recent Transfers. Bpecial Dispatch to The Btar. NEW YORK, December 15.—The war debt controversy has brought a flood of Questions abou® goid movements. The only gainers in the huge gold movements that have taken place in many parts of the world since Septeme ber, 1931, to date are the shipping and insurance companies. In a period of small imports and exports, they were able to lift their charges on gold ship- ments—and they did. Very few gold shipments have been ‘lost in mid-air or mid-ocean, though cargoes from China and South America come here today heavily guarded inst possible pirate attacks. Gold Payments Rare. If Great Britain had sent to this cuuntry 158 tons of gold to meet its yment of $95.550,000 due on interest 2nd 7 principal, it would have raised this country's monetary gold stocks, assuming % | no other important additions or subtrac- tions took place in the last 15 days of this year, about to the level where they were at the beginning of 1932. To date the country has a net gold loss of $100,~ 000,000 for the year. | QGreat Britain rarely has paid her war | debt installments to us in gold. The 3 |two 1923 payments were entirely in 4| Liberty bonds. The next year two cash payments, $50,000,000 and $141937, were made, the rest being in United States Government securities. In June, 1925, only $76 was paid in cash, the rest being in United States Government bonds, while in December of that year only Government bonds were used. In 1026 United States Government bonds were used to pay the entire debt, and in June, 1927, Britain paid $37 in cash and the rest in Governments. In June, 1928, she paid only 37 cents and {in June, 1929, the cash payment was $13.50 and in December it was $21. Cash Payment. The 1930 payments were made in | cash because Great Britain then could not buy our Government securities at | less than par. The first 1931 payment 5% | was made in cash. The payments due | December, 1931, and June, 1932, were « | subject to the moratorium. Although the public never pays any | attention to “earmarked” gold, as a | less spectacular transaction than an actual shipment, it means a loss or ad- | dition to our gold stocks just as much in |85 an export or import of the yellow 5% | metal, for such gold is at once sepa- é‘ |rated from or added to our present ' monetary gold pile (Copyright, 1y 24 * 14 1932.) of Your I H.
