A. U. DEBATE TEAM DEFEATS OXFORD Side Opposing Cancellation of War Debts Wins. ‘ | Opposing cancellation of war debts, American University’s debating team | last night won a unanimous decision | over a two-man team from Oxford; University, England. The international debate, coming in the midst of negotiations between the United States and its European debtors over the war debts, drew a crowd which | overflowed the capacity of the college chapel in Hurst Hall on the American U. campus. Names of Judges. The judges, who were asked to act on “merits of the debate, and not on the merits of the question,” were John H_ McEvers, Special Assistent to the Attorney neral; Randolph C. Shaw, chief counsel of the Prohibition Bureau, Department of Justice, and William C. Van Vieck, dean of the George Wash- ington University Law School. The winning American U. team was composed of Robert Marcus and Leon Elskerg, while the visitors were Geoffrey | M. Wilson and A. J. Ervine. The pre- siding officer was Dr. George B. Woods, dean of the College of Liberal Arts of , American University. The Oxford men based their argu- ment not on the question of the moral nor legal obligation of the debtors to y, but _upon what they called the e of “economic necessity.” America would gain economically by cancellation, the Oxford men claimed, | declaring a prosperous Europe would mean four times as much each year to this country in trade as the annual war debt payments. They criticized the “haphazard” system of refunding whereby Great Britain paid more on the dollar than other debtors of th» United States, and claimed that the American tariff, “the most formidable in world’s “history,” had made it in- creasingly difficult for Great Britain to pay, especially since Great Britain imports more than she exports, while the United States exports more than is imported. In reply to charges that Europ> hai increased armaments, the Oxford men charged that the United States had | increased armament more in proportion | to its size than any country of Eu- Tope. American Claim. The - American University teem claimed the European powers were legally and morally bound to pay, and the United States was morally bound mot to cancel the debts. The United States in the World War paid its way w cash, and in addition loaned largely to the allies, by borrowing from the American people. To cancel the debts would be taking the load off European ‘urpuyen. and placing it on the ericans, or like “forcing a man vho lolned money to pay himself back,” declared the Amerlcan dehnt.e‘s COUNTY OUT OF DEBT KEEPS TAX RATE LOW Island Area in Washington Is Prosperous and Has No Bonds or Warrants. By the Assoclated Press. GLASGOW, Scotland, December 1.— Stanley Baldwin, cabinet member and former prime mlnhter told an audience here last night that young Britons had better go back to the farm, for the nation no longer can be the work of the world. “When once more prosperity comes to the dominions and they can o) their doors to our people, you will then see, for instance in Canada, industrial developments developed by British money, with British brains and with Brmal:i labor, and not with American,” “S8o far as I can see, any idea that we can be the work house of the world can no longer be held. It is untenable. We have got to devote our minds to greater cultivation of the land than we have done for years past.” g = TALLULAH BANKHEAD BIDS MOVIES FAREWELL Alabama Actress Leaves Hollywood ‘With “No Great Regrets’—Heads for New York. By the Associated Press. HOLLYWOOD, Calif., December 1.— Her film career admittedly disappoint- ing to herself, Tallulah Bankhead, Ala- bama actress, who first gained fame on the London stage, has said farewell to Hollywood with “no regrets.” “I wish my pictures had been better,” said Miss Bankhead as she left for Pas- adena to board a train for New York. “None of the parts really suited me or my particular personality or the type of talent I am presumed to possess. But that's over now and there was no one "ho I feel could be held to blame for t.” ‘The actress denied reports she had signed a new contract with any film company.
