NEW YORK, December 1.—The re- ery in sterling exchange and the jposition to discount somewhat the tish note to be published Friday bave a better tone today to the foreign Eroup of bonds that had been heavy most of the week. United Kingdom 5iis rallied 1 lpoints, which brought them up 3 poin! rom their recent low. Australian 4138 nd 5s were from 1% to 21 points Ihigher, while City of Sydney 515s rose 3 Fiench 7'%s gained fraction- . Italicn 7s touched 99, the best Ip in scme time. In contrast with [these quotations there was heaviness in Japsneee Gs, which lost 2 points, al- though scme of the Japanese munici- pals and public utilities were stronger. Less Pressure Seen. re was less pressure against the | railroad bor?ds as a whole, but n quite sharp declines in individual issues. New, York Central 4!gs lost nearly » point and the refunding 5s over 2 points. Small declines occurred Rock Island, Erfe, Missouri Pacific, hany Corporation and Baltimore & Ohlo issues. Pennsylvania 5s ad- vanced 1% points, and Great Northern Js & fraction. ¥ & There was further liquidation in In- I rnational Telephone & Telegraph 4125 | nd 5s, which have been under pressuce or some time. Studebaker 6s were fheavy, Western Union 5s lost & poi. and slight reverses occurred in a few of the oil company hond: General Motor: 6s, which are to be S A reary I at 102, were quoted . The redemption of these bonds will take out of the market one of its most stable short-term corpora- ssues. m‘?h‘e high-grade public utilities were quiet, with demand for them insistent but. the supply small. Under normal ci tances this condition would re- sult in additional offerings of new securities of this type, but with litile construction being engaged in there is not much occasion for refinancing. Stronger in Afternoon. Bonds were steadier in the afternoon. There was a good recovery in Baltimore & Ohio 4':5 of 1960, which were up | nearly 2 points, and the first 4s re- gained a point after losing 313 points Wednesday. Pressed Steel 5s rose 2 points and Erie 55 1% points. The Australian loans were the strong- est in the foreign department, with the 418 gaining 3 points and New South Wales 55 up 3% points. German 53is advanced nearly a point. Further gains occurred in the Japanese public utilities. There wes slight decline in the dis- count Treasury bonds, the rest of the Government list showing little change. CURB PRICES UP AT SESSION'S END Rally Laid to Technical Con- ditions Rather Than Trade News. BY JOHN A. CRONE. Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, December 1.—Curb Ex- change stocks closed higher today. The rally resulted from technical condi- tions ratber than afternoon news de- velopments. Trading remained light as prices advanced.* Electric Bond & Share made & modest gain. Standard Oil of Indiana was a trifle firmer. Cities Service was steady. A. O. Smith Corporation was up more than & half point. Just preceding the rally, however, North American Light & Power 6 per cent preferred broke 21 points to a new low level. Bickford's likewise reached a new low. Trade Reports Mixed. Retai] trade reports were mixed. The gain in October gold output over the previous month caused the gold shares to stir, but brought no important price moves in the first three hours. Further gasoline price reductions came just at a time when the petroleum industry is discussing further curtailment of oil production and of refining operations. Axton Fisher Tobacco A with a rise of 5 points reached a new peak for the year. Other tobacco securities, however, were inactive. American Laundry Machinery was down a point. American Cyanamid B | was active, but virtually unchanged, | following the announcement that Calco | Chemical Co., a subsidiary, had acquired control of the Noil Chemical & Coler Works, Inc. Pan-American Airways pointed fractionally higher. | Air Contracts Let. Pan-American Airways announced that it had let two contracts for com- plete engineering work for planes cap- able of flying any important trade route on any ocean with a pay load. The company started to investigate possibilities of ocean air transport two years ago. Pittsburgh Plate Glass eased on & few offerings. Babcock & Wilcox was down about 2 points. Federated Metals improved as further details came out about its acquisition by American Smelting. Food shares again lagged. (Copyright, 1932.) Cotton Market NEW YORK, December 1—Cotton futures opened steady, 1 higher to 3 Jower on steady Liverpool cables, which were offset by Southern selling. De- cember, 5.82; January, 58 March, 5.91; May, 6.00; July, 6.09; October, 6.26. Increased Soufthern selling, as well as selling by local operators, carried cotton values down after the opening, March declining from 5.94 to 5.85. Vol- ume, however, was small and there was sufficient trade price fixing and com- mission house buying to hold the mar- ket within comparatively narrow limits. New outside interest was comparatively small and traders were still inclined to await developments in connection with the foreign war-debt problem.
