B -4 EARLE DESCRIBES WAR OVER OYSTERS Declares Conservation Depu- ties Were Fired Upon by Pirates in Lower Potomac. Bpecial Dispatch to The Star. BALTIMORE, December 1.—How oyster pirates in more than .50 boats| surrounded a crarft containing two Conservation Commission deputies and peppered the officers with buckshot was described by Conservation Commis; sioner Swepson Earle upon his return here yesterday from the scene of the Bouthern Maryland oyster war. The oystermen opened fire on the deputies after they arrested two hand scrapers in the Potomac River, com- E:llmz them to cut loose the boat con- ! ining the offenders. Telling of the arrest and the shoot- tng. Earle said: “The deputies placed the men under mrrest and started towing their boat ashore when a shot was fired from one of the oyster boats nearby. Afd shot the moving toward the deputies’ craft. “As the boats started closing in on the deputies firing came from other boats, peppering the officers. Fortu- nately the oystermen were at a great enough distance from the deputies to Jessen the speed of the shot and they did not penetrate their heavy, sheep- 1 Rcsuzmg blood would be shed if they veturned the fire, and being greatly outnumbered, the deputies cut the pirate boat free and started to shore. The fir- | ing then ceased. gWe have been investigating thej ghooting since it occurred last Wednes- day and hope to come up with the offenders. At present everything is under control, the.vialators having scur- ried to cover since boats from Mar land and Virginia began patrolling the | Potomac.” DEPRESSION PRODUCES POTASH MINING IN U.
