Mannirg, 71, former di- rector of the Bureau Mines, who | died Wednesday night, in Forest Hill Long Iskind, was to be buried in Onk Hill Cemetery here, at 4 pm. today. Dr. Manning, when head of the Bureau of Mines, established the chemical lab- oratories at American University, which | later were turned over to the Chemical Warfare Service during the World War. Born in Horn Lake, Miss. in 1861. Dr. Manning attended the University of Mississippi and was awarded an en- gineering degrec in 1881. In 1886 he became a civil engineer with the Geo logical Survey, serving until 1910, when he was npnmmrd assistant director of the Bureau of Mines. He was made director in 1915 and held the post for five vears. s Leaving the Government service in 1920. he became director of rescarch | for the American Petdoleum Institute | and later held other posts in connection | with petroleum engineering and re: scarch. Dr Manning was a_consulting engi- neer of the Bureau of Mines, a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and a member of the American Association of Petro- leum Geologists, Americin Chemical Society.
