BOLBTS F PYTHON CANSHALLDW AN Zoo Director Says Reptile Is| Kind That Crushed Boy | to Death Recently. BY THOMAS R. HENRY. Could the new 27-foot reticulated | python at the Zoo, biggest snake in | captivity, swallow a man’ It is barely possible, say Dr. William M. Mann, and L. Ross Freeman, the monster reptile’s captor, | but both' men have lived many months in big python country without hearing of a case or knowing of any authentic recorded instance. The nearest to it, Mr. Freeman says, | 1s the killing of a little boy in Sumatra recently. The snake crushed the life | out of the child, but natives intervened before it had a chance to swallow its victim. It might have done so if it had been very hungry. It is barely possible, the reptile hunter believes, that occa- sionally a full-grown Sumatran native is killed and swallowed. if he chances | to run upon a hungry snake when alone. | The natives are small men with narrow | shoulders. The width of the shoulders, he believes, alone would make it im- | possible for the creature to swallow an adult white man Zoo director, stantly by constriction around the breatt, which stops the heart action, and is of just the right size to be swal- lowed comfortably. It also is fond of the Sumatran deer, a small creature weighing about 60 pounds, It can dine only on the females. for the big horns of the male probably would prevent it being swallowed. If very hungry the big snake might eat almost any creature it could swal- low. Its digestive powers are remark- able. Hair, bones and hoofs are dis- posed of as easily as flesh and blood. The work of digestion, however, takes up most of the monster's energy. so that it can do little until it is ready | for enother meal. The big snakes and the ferocious tigers live in the same jungles and the favorite food of each is the wild pig. That they ever actually fight each other for their food is very doubtful. In the first place, there is plenty for | both. They simply avoid each other., Secondly, the snake could not swallow | a full-grown tiger even if it could kill} it. The tiger would not be likely to| eat the snake unless extremely hun- gry. Also, it was pointed out, the great Teptile would not be much of a match for the tiger, whose claws are like sharp knives which could cut through its body. Never Swallowed Alive. The'big snake, Dr. Mann says, never | would swallow another animal alive. It would wait until the pig or deer had ceased all movement before beginning the laborious process of getting it down its throat. Although there are indi- vidual Gifferences among snakes, few ask more than the mere satisfaction of their appetites. The rattlesnake, he points out, is especially a gentleman in this respect. Surrounded by live rats, it will kill only one and allow the others to run over it as much as they please. THE EVENING is slumbering or whether it ever sleeps. It has no ‘eye-lids, like fishes. The presumption is that it really is sleep- ing when it is lying motionless. Keeping its stomach filled is practi- cally the monster's only interest in life. It apparently has no interest in other snakes Whether the reptiles in’ the wild state have any social life, Dr. Mann says, is very doubtful. Scores of rattlesnakes will coil together for the Winter in a convenient hole in the rocks | and last Winter Dr. Mann received | more than 100 snakes, representing several local varieties, which were dug up by a steam shovel in nearby Mary- land, coiled together in a great bunch. But, says the Zoo director, it is probable Right Reserved to STAR, that they all were attracted by a eon- venient den, rather than by each other. The activity of the pythons at the Zoo, Dr. Mann says, depends very much on the temperature. At a range of be- tween about 50 and 80 degrees Faren- heit, they move about considerable. Above or below this range they are al- most motionless. This _temperature sensitivity probably is characteristic of all reptiles. Dr. Mann says, being much more marked among the Zoo reptiles. In the Arizona Desert. he says, he has seen lizards that were quite active al- most instantly relapse into motionless- ness when a cloud crossed the face of the sun, Limit Quantities WASHINGTON, D.
