S—r THE SUNDAY STAR, WASHINGTON, D. C, —PART THREE Washable Suits and Dresses Styles Are Cooler for Hot Summer No Matter How Hot the Weather Women Can Be Dressed in Comfort and Style. HOT wave on isually 2 diction be e in tt it 4s sure that three five or six weeks from now be a spell of t there's no reason to weather this Summer turn out to be a season of unusua the dressmakers and milliners and accessory makers may flatter them- selves that they prepared us for it So on with the bright, sunshiny days and the warm Summer evenil We were never better able to bear them with a smile. On court or the goif your husband appropriately d the four walls of his office or for more formal evening occasions he still suffers the discomfort of clothes ill adapted to ‘warmer weather * THE fashion for cottons of all descrip- 3 tions this season has done much to provide us with dresses appropriate for | & very warm Summer. Pique evening dresses may not actually be any cooler than satfn or silk crepe evening dresses, and organdie ‘may be no lighter than chiffon, but cotton evening dresses have a crispness about them that makes them seem cooler. ‘We may wear cotton dresses for eve- ning without misgivings if we choose and we may also wear gottons and linens for town wear without feeling that we are any less appropriately dressed than the women who go about in silks and lightweight wools. The acket and skirt suit cf linen or cotton as an air of as great importance as the tailored suit of wool or silk, and | swagger coats of cotton tweed or meshy cotton weave are every bit as smart as those of flannel cr fine wool fleece &k 2% CUT and silhouette of dresses this season are favorable to warmer weather conditions. There are sandals appropriate for every occasion and meshy cotton weaves and perfo- rated leathers provide unusual airiness | to oug fcot coverings. Mesh swckmgs\ are a8 light and comfortable as no stockings at all and a great deal more acceptable to the well dressed woman. | Mesh gloves, too, have done their bit to make it pos for women to be smartly dressed without discomfort. ¥ ek PARIS started the good word for wide- brimmed hats and Americans re- peated it with emphasis. Your hat brim may be as wide as you please to provide welcome shade fo your face and neck, and crowns are thallow enough to prevent any uncomfortable ressure over the ears and forehead. f you prefer the brimless hat, you may wear one perched on one side of your head so light and airy that you may g0 about unconscious cf the fact that | you are wearing any hat at all. And so on through the list of acces- gories. Purses are smaller and lighter. | Evening jackets are very short and of cobwebby lightness. Even jewelers have modified their wares to suit the needs of warmer weather, cflering to us brace- lets, necklaces and earrings of extremely light weight. * ok ¥ —.—— | Smart Swagger Coats | and Tailored Suits O matter how popular the white swagger coats of the Summer be- come, we will not tire of them. Th are a fashion that improves on ac- quaintance. And there is nothing about them to make familiarity with them breed contempt for them. They are made in all sorts of fabrics—and they look well with frocks of any and every color. The swagger coat of white wool fleece has met with notable success with well- dressed women this Summer. You may choose it in pure White or egg shell tone, in full length or three-quarter length. Then there are swagger coats made of silk crepe to match silk crepe dresses and of linen to go with linen or figured cotton prints coats and dr tailored sort-have cc ses of & decidedly into their own Necklines, though | ~ e St | Velvet sl Bt White Shoes Smartest With Velyst and Feather » Left: Eveletembroidered batiste is used for many of the mo:t effective of this Summer's dresses and suits, Suit has white organdie cuffs on the jacket and white organdie piping on the dress. in navy blue, white organdie and the Lelt buckle i scattered over the black background of a dress made of imported voile. For street | wegr there are oxfords or pumps show- ing white with trimming of brown or black, and for sports you will like the new oxfords and ghillies showing a combination of white with black or | brown saddles. White buckskin ghillies made with low, flat heels and crepe rubber soles are chosen for tennis. For sailing and boating there are flat-heeled sandals or ghillies made of unlined elkskin or canvas, with rubber soles, and for beach wear there are mesh sandals with strap acfoss the ankle or instep, made with a flat or medium high heel. White cloth shoes are trimmed with bands of white pigskin in very smart fashion, and sometimes punched calf- These shoes are very striking for semi-sports wear, with white pique or other cotton or linen dresses. Office Dressing in the Mode NCE new fashions were designed | and carried out for the benefit of the lady of leisure, and the poor little | working girl had to do what she could to wear clothes that were suitable to her situation and not entirely without charm and smartness. 1t didn’t make any difference to the dressmakers if long, trailing skirts were difficult to manage in a business office or if high, tight collars did make steady work over a desk painfully difficult. Only a relatively small number of women worked in offices and they were of no importance so far as fashions went Now all this is different, and the dress requirements of the American business woman are taken into con- sideration not only by designers abroad but by dressmakers and manufacturers in this country. The poor little working girl, even if she has had to take a cut, still has money enough to spend on clothes to be a person of real importance and she has ways of keeping as closely abreast of the new fashions as the wives and daughters of the big brave men for whom she. works. In fact, out of her hard-earned wages she may manage to have a sum of money to spend for hats and shoes and dresses and coats and necklaces and things larger than the dress allowance of her employer's daughters—unless, of course, - those daughters have contrived to get out of | Lamp shades, the leisured class and are working in some other busy office. Clothes are important to any wom- an, but they are or should be more important to a business woman than to the woman who stays at home, be- cause the woman at home can depend on other things to supply a favorable background to her personality. Meet a young woman in her own charmingly furnished house or apart- ment and you judge her not only by the clothes she wears and the way she arranges her hair, but by the furnish- ings and decorations of her room. flowers, pictures, dra- peries and books all go to express per- sonality. Meet her at the country club, on the beach or on board an ocean liner and fresh air, sky and water all g0 to add brilliance to your impres- sion and to give distinction to her ap- pearance. But see the same girl against the impersonal background of the usual sort of business office, and all the poor dear has to enhance her personality is the clothes she carries ml\ her back. And if you notice her at all y critical about the way she does her hair and her complexion and the at- tention she has given her hands than you would if you met her amid more flattering surroundings. Put it down as an irrefutable fact that, in business, clothes and general grooming play a rather more important role than anywhere else. ’ | Flowers on Dresses. | Tweedy Finish. There are also |some very new broadcloth hatsto add; zest to the game of choosing a hat when the usual fabric or straw hat is tiresome. ‘There is a new shallow- | brimmed sallor that has received much | favorable comment and is worn straight across the head and dipped down somewhat. Then there are small turbans gov- | ered entirely with hackle or other fine | feathers, At present they are designed to be worn tilted slightly over to the | right side, but if the straight hat line | prevails we shall expect to see feather | turbans of the straight, skull-cap | outline. For immediate wear milliners are making wide, floppy-brimmed capelines, some of which are trimmed with large, flat flowers on the under side of the brim. Lightweight felt hats are rapidly as- suming an important place in the Sum- mer wardrobe. They are of modified cloche outline and are most attractive in soft pastel tone, to be worn with | sheer cotton or silk frocks. Beach hats are wider and dropier than ever, forming veritable canopies across the shoulders and back of the| neck. Brims of these new beach hats are sometimes exceedingly shallow. jDark Sheer Mz;terial | Has Smart Approval WHTH vivid, bright colors very much | in evidence at the resorts this Summer, with pastels highly favored for evening and white dominant every- | where, it is worth noting that dark, sheer materials are considered very smart for wear in town during the | warmer weather.
