The Knights of Columbus annual New maritime charts of the coasts of Venezuela and Panama, made more smportant with the increased business in oil taken from large fields in that region, will be made up by the Hydro- graphic Office, Navy Department, from dflta compiled by the U. S. S. Hannibal, which has just completed an eight- month cruise on this assignment. The vessel, uncer command of Comdr. C. Slayton, U. 8. N., reached the Phils delphia Navy Yard yesterday. An area of some 1,400 square miles, including the Venczuelan side of the Gulf of Paria, and an area of some 300 square miles surrcunding Cape Mala, in the Gulf of Panama, were surveyed by the 14 officers and 250 enlisted men of the Hannibal, in conjunction with the two submarine chasers accompany- ing her. In surveying the results of the work yesterday, the Navy Depart- ment said that “in many instances the party was obliged to erect its triangu- lation towers in the water at the edge of the shore line, and even resorted to towers lowered from .the boats into the water for marke: method never before known to have been used in of this type.” > Navy's photographic planes were ‘brought into use to aid in surveying the jungle country. The Hannibal sur- veyed areas never before chartered and the parties found the charts now exist- ing to be so old as to be useless to the mariner. Great changes in the con- figuration of the coast line, as well as in depths of water, were found since the Spaniards made the original sur- veys from 50 to 100 years ago.
