COLUMBUS, Ohio, June 18.—A swin- dle of international aspect was under ‘shestigation here today as authorities ‘prébed activities of a gang of alleged wire-tappers, said to have obtained thousands of dollars from the Western ¢ “Union Telegraph Co. < A member of the alleged gang, Mrs. Flo Hadley, 30, is under arrest here. Another member, Leonard Hagey, was arrested at St. Louis last night, where police are searching for two other men said to have been implicated. Police said the gang. operated at Faton Rapids and Howell, Mich, by cutting into the wires of the telegraph company and authorizing payments in secret code on mythical money orders. Police said the ®ing had obtained more than $6,000 in Michigan atone. After arresting Mrs. Hadley police searched her room and found $2,105, a wig, spectacles, telegraph instruments and a suit case containing two pass- ports to England for herself and Hagey. ‘When Hagey was arrested similar tele- graphic equipment was found in his automobile. Officials said an attempt had been made to cut into telegraph wires 14 miles east of Columbus on April 20, but that the gang had obtained no money from the Columbus office.
