FINANCIA THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON, D. €., T”["ls,n-‘\lv MARC —— ¥ § BONDS ARE LOWER N SMALL MARKET High-Grade Issues Continue " steady—U. S. Group Advances. BY F. H. RICHARDSON, Bpecial Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, March moved lower again today. Trading was in small volume, however, and there was no reason to believe that, apart from a few special instances. there was any large volume offerings hanging over the market. The steadiness of| high-grade issues contributed to this| theory. The market opened higher, buoyed up by another cut in the Bank of England rate, Wall Street anticipates another reduction in the New York Federal Reserve rediscount rate next week, and both bill rates and time money were easy in _consequence. United States Government issues werc | firm, the long-term group advancing| 14 to 'z point. were those at discount, such as Treas- ury 3s, 3lgs, 33s and 3%s. Liberties were up narrowly. Short-term Gov- ernments were reported in good de- mand, with the recently issued 33is quoted at a premium of 12-32 to 15-32. Most prime corporation issues clung closely to their previous price levels. Atchison General 4s dropped !4 point. American _Telephone 5s were un- changed. In the secondary list there was a general down trend. Junmior rail issues such as Erie 5s, Chicago & North- western 4%s and St. Paul 5s were lower. Nickel Plate 6s, however, which have declined in the last three market sessions, recovered about a point and Western Maryland 5'.s were narrowly higher. Industrials like Youngstown Sheet & Tube 5s Paramount-Publix 5!5s, International Paper 5s and Shell Union Oil 5s eased. Thers was also some unsettlement among junior utility issues, notably those listed on the Curb Exchange. A holding company situation in the West was still causing some concern. In the foreign department the pros- pective liquidation of the late Ivar Kreuger's fortune caused some unset- tlement. Traders recalled that Kreuger had purchased $17.000,000 of the Young . plan 528 when they were issued and he is known to have had other large hcldings of German bonds. German 5125 dropped to a new low on the move- | ment. While Kreuger & Toll 5s, Inter- naticnal Match 5s, International Tele- phone Securities and others of the Kreuger group followed this downturn, other German issues were compara- tively steady. Argentine issues were all sharply Jower. This was believed to reflect nothing but the temporary cessation of sinking fund purchaces, now completed for the current guarter. Other South Americans were quiet and little changed. Japanese government steady but Tokio 5',s dropped 215 points. These bonds are now selling a little above 50 cents on the doliar in spite of assurances from Japanese bankers here that there is little chance . of any interruption of service. POTATO MARKET.
